RIP Bernard Hill AKA Theoden. Passed just a few weeks ago. Also, the line about no parent should have to bury their child was an addition by the actor. The battle of Helm’s Deep is probably my favorite cinematic battle ever. The only battle that comes close is in the next movie! lol. Can’t wait!
  • Their cloaks were made by the elves. Some of the elven magic is woven into the fabric and helps camouflage the hobbits from unfriendly eyes.

19:50 the voices of Gandalf and Saruman were blended and the actors were asked to speak like each other too. Nice touch.
  • So the rope Sam & Frodo had was made by the elves & was magically designed to unknot when not needed. That’s why Sam could untie it so easily when they got to the bottom of the cliff.

Now that we see Gandalf back, I’ll follow up on a previous comment about the 3 Elf rings we saw in the very beginning of the first movie. No spoilers, as these facts are not mentioned in the movies. So Galadriel has one elf ring — we saw her as the very first person seen in the first movie intro. Elrond has the 2nd elf ring — he inherited it from the former High King of Elves, Gil-Galad, who is also depicted in that intro (not shown but Gil-Galad was killed attacking Sauron). Finally the 3rd elf ring is warn by … Gandalf. It originally was given to an ancient Elf leader named Cirdan, who lives on the coast. When Gandalf arrived to Middle Earth by ship on his mission, Cirdan recognized he was a solid dude and gave Gandalf the ring to aid him in his efforts. Gandalf’s ring is called the Ring of Fire and that might actually explain his talent for fireworks, starting fires, and creating illumination like in Moria.

When Gandalf says, "Or rather Saruman as he should have been" he's referring to his (for a lack of better terms right now) new clothes, being clad in white. Him and Saruman are 2 of the 5 wizards, or Istari who were sent by the Valar (Middle Earth's Gods) to try to unite the world against Sauron. Saruman was the head of the order which correlates with the color in his title 'Saruman the White'. Of course Saruman abandoned their mission for personal gain, but again when they were sent he was their leader. But after Gandalf defeats the Balrog and dies, he's sent back to Middle Earth as the new leader of the Istari. So before where Saruman was more powerful than Gandalf, now they're on much more equal footing. In fact Gandalf is probably stronger. But that's what Gandalf meant, and that's why new Gandalf is known as "Gandalf the White". He basically got a mega power upgrade. Also in the books and I think in the canon of the movies as well, Gandalf the White went to Lothlorien when he came back to Middle Earth before finding the Three Hunters, and Galadriel gave him his new staff.
  • Fun fact: the actor Jeffrey Rhys Davies that plays Gimli also did the voice for Treebeard😊
  • Elves don't naturally die, but they can be killed, fade from grief or willingly hand their lives down and pass. ❤

The best part for me from these movies is how they kept the beautiful poetic lines of the book. Every actor was like reciting poetry when delivering every line. Ahhh, Tolkien way with language was so glorious!

28:53 “Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.” - Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring 🙃

This movie had the record for biggest battle scene in a movie for about a year; Return of the King broke that record. I saw an interview with John Rhys-Davies, in which he talked about playing Gimli and the voice of Treebeard. He said, "Once you've played a dwarf and a tree in the same movie, it's time to retire."

"Your words are poison!" - Eowyn showed Grimma his place. Even being left alone with king possessed and her brother banished she still got her will strong!
  • @prasannasurange
Aragorn actor Viggo Mortensen actually broke his foot toe when he kicked the iron helmet...but continued the shot anyway. They kept the shot in the final edit. The acting...is REAL
  • Aragorn it´s a Dúnedain, a sort of "royal" race among the men, blessed with long life as descents of Númenor (they have part of elves in their blood). That´s why he has 87 years old here, and looks young.

54:46 "I just want to be there..." That's the effect of Rohan. I always feel the same way.

The movies changed Faramir's character significantly, for dramatic affect, I suppose. In the Books, he never planned to take the Ring to Gondor. In fact, here is his response when he found Frodo carried the One Ring (And it was Sam who accidentally spilled the beans, not Gollum.): "Alas for Boromir! It was too sore a trial!" he said. "How you have increased my sorrow, you two strange wanderers from a far country, bearing the peril of Men! But you are less judges of Men than I of Halflings. We are truth-speakers, we men of Gondor. We boast seldom, and then perform, or die in the attempt. Not if I found it on the highway would I take it I said. Even if I were such a man as to desire this thing, and even though I knew not clearly what this thing was when I spoke, still I should take those words as a vow, and be held by them. But I am not such a man. Or I am wise enough to know that there are some perils from which a man must flee. Sit at peace! And be comforted, Samwise. If you seem to have stumbled, think that it was fated to be so. Your heart is shrewd as well as faithful, and saw clearer than your eyes. For strange though it may seem, it was safe to declare this to me. It may even help the master that you love. It shall turn to his good, if it is in my power. So be comforted. But do not even name this thing again aloud. Once is enough."

2:00 he wasnt scared of it, he was just worried about his companions, remember what Gandalf sayed in the last movie about Balrog "this foe is beyond any of you" not any of us
  • You're right... Aragorn has an awesome backstory. In the books his father was killed by orcs when he was a young kid (3 i believe). His mother took him to Rivendell where he was raised in the house of Elrond. They did not tell him about his heritage while he was young because they wanted him to be a kid for a while. When he matured, he traveled with Elrond's twin sons Elodan and Elrohir where they taught him most of his woodcraft. He met arwen in rivendell as an adult and immediately thought she was a reincarnation of Luthien who was thought to be the most beautiful being ever created (and, as it was... an ancestor of both of them). Elrond told him that he could not court arwen until he bacame king. Aragorn then traveled middle earth trying to foil the plans of sauron and help humans but he traveled under a fake name.
