  • I have seen these models before back when Hornby first sold them, but your video tells us how they work in detail and what is needed to keep them running. Full credit to the OO Live Steam Club for keeping these amazing models going, I have a live steam 16mm scale narrow gauge garden railway, great fun. This also has many of the same running and maintenance issues as these Hornby locomotive but that is very much part of the enjoyment of live steam in what every scale you choose. Great video Jenny.
  • Thank you so much for a fascinating and informative video which gives a succinct insight into Live Steam.
  • Absolutely loved this video. Still kicking myself I didn’t buy one when they were available. They were quite a lot of money at the time
  • "Chances slim that you'll get it working again". We bought a Mallard for a fraction of the normal price and shipped it to our Canadian home (Emigrated from the UK in '03). It got hot but didn't move. Somebody had used tap water and its tiny pipes were blocked. Took it apart and soaked the parts in vinegar overnight and hey presto it worked! Wish we'd had this informative video when we first ran it. PS We run a model railway show for tourists - click on the logo to access our vids including Mallard running outside.

  • Dear Madam, Absolutely brilliant! Never seen such contrivances! Really amazing! Cheers from Brazil!
  • Oh wow that is a really cool club. Neat steamers. Thanks for sharing Jennifer. David From Ohio, USA. 😊👍
  • The OO Live Steam Club also has very useful videos about how to maintain these locos.
  • @l1a146
Thankyou for a little insight into a concept that always intrigued me.
  • Given hornbys recent pricing ideas just imagine how much they would be sold for now if Hornsby continued to sell them
  • @RonDennisMum
Brilliant - a really interesting and informative insight. Thank you.
  • Always loved the live steam trains since I was a kid. Now that I’m an adult I have been saving for a set for a while now. Looking for a new or relatively new flying Scotsman set. I still dream about these steamers.
  • Fabulous detailed coverage Jenny but with one glaring omission if someone is tempted to run one of the 12,000 or so long dormant models. It will have the same Operator's Manual it came with nearly 20 years which is WRONG at the point "Setting the locomotive in motion" and most likely lead to crash at speed. First timers MUST start with a rolling road where no damage can result and learn where the Operator's Manual is wrong.
  • @PalomboDylan
Hornby needs to start reproducing these. I love my Hornby live steam Mallard. I really wish Hornby would have put in the instruction manual that there is a small switch inside the live steam transformer that is used to switch the electrical input from 220 UK household electrical voltage to 120 USA household electrical voltage to where americans such as myself would know how to get to the switch inside the transformer so it will run correctly on the first run and not having to call Hornby in the UK or be a part of the OO live steamers club to find out why the locomotive won't work like it should since the switch is automatically set to 220 volts for a UK household. If I would have known about this in ninth grade my Hornby live steam golden fleece would still be in service.......😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
  • I have one of the Mallard starter sets which I bought just over 2 years ago, not been able to run it yet but, as I’m in the preoccess of moving to a bigger flat, I’ll be able to build a test track with curves of a suitable radius to run ALL of my stock and keep it in my bedroom. I’ve had a practice go on the system when it first came out and really enjoyed it, it is very close to the real thing, just like my 16mm scale live steam locos, apart from the fact that they are gas fired and require careful management of the burner to make sure itthey don’t run out of water before they run out of gas. Great video Jenny, hopefully it’ll help with getting the locos that have been put aside out of storage with people willing to give it a go and actually take the time to learn how to drive the locos.
  • Great video and a great model looks bought to get started just like the real thing.I bet once you get the hang of it,it would be great to operate.
