'Fukue's Theme Part I' was written while shooting koto B-roll for the Finding Fukue documentary, and became the basis from which I wrote the main musical themes in the film's score.

The lyrics were inspired by a recurring dream that Fukue had about the two of us, from the time I lived in Japan as a child. In her dream, we're at the edge of a rice paddy where we used to play and catch little frogs. I had dozens of them in all the colours of the rainbow held gently in my shirt, and I was handing them one by one to Fukue, which to me is a beautiful metaphor for friendship and love. ❤️

Fukue's Theme Part I lyrics:

We play
Around the paddy square
Reach out
Our tiny friends are there

Come here
My dress is safe and warm
We can be your second home
I’ll love your yellow, purple, blue and red and brown
I swear

I’m scared
My heart’s been beaten bare
I’ve stared
At this page for 20 years

Somewhere
You have to be somewhere
Your deserve a life that is fair
We’ve both known paths of solitude
But you belong

It’s love
It’s love
It doesn’t matter the colour you are
I will care for you

Don’t you know that it’s love?
It’s love
Give every wish on a star so you know I’ll be there for you
Give every frog in my care just to show that I’ll share with you
Give every tear I can bear just to be anywhere with yo

  • It is April 10, 2024, and I just watched "Finding Fukue". It was so beautiful and moving. I am so happy for you that you found your friend! Thank you for creating a YT channel and for your wonderful music! (Fellow musician here)

  • i love your song. i'm especially talking about the melody because i am not native English and don't pay that much attention to lyrics in songs. with or without the documentary its special

I cried for the last half of the story of your journey to find her again. I saw the headline and decided to watch and though it made me cry, it’s because you worked so hard and travelled so many miles to finally have a happy reunion. You are both beautiful and cared so much for each other and it was heartwarming! Love to you both!

This is such a beautiful song. I was incredibly touched by your "Finding Fukue" video that this song just reminds me of all the friends I've had, but life happened. I really need to go talk to them again.

I love the entire song, but the “call-and-response” part between Jessica and the Koto at 2:23 - 2:43 is my favorite part. I find myself replaying that part so much, it just hits the spot 🤣

Damn, I cried so much during the documentary and I love the song! Best wishes to you and Fukue from Belgium!
  • 🥲We all should look for a friend who would care for you like the two of you care for each other.

When I first watched the video about you and Fukue it was interesting. And then I couldn't stop watching it. I hope you guys are doing well now!

This was so touching. Your journey on finding Fukue was so beautiful. I truly loved it. I have a friend who was only recently told who their real parent is and that parent is overseas. and it will be a tough hunt to find them. I shared that video to give them hope. I'm so happy for you and Fukue and wish nothing but the best for the two of you and your futures.
  • Hi. I wanted to tell you that I loved this song. I recently watched the documentary about finding Fukue and thought it was so amazing. Everything you did to reconnect with your childhood friend is so moving. I tried to find an old friend of mine from when I was a kid and found out that they had passed away from cancer the year before. I couldn't be happier for you and Fukue. I hope you guys are still in touch and that your friendship lasts forever. It's such a rare thing to find a true friend like that. Best wishes to you both.

I'm a 箱爪 player too. You are striking. Not only would Kokia find you enjoyable, I believe Anoushka Shankar would also enjoy composing with you.
