Still makes me uncomfortable listening to Rocky begging for his life. Brilliant acting from James Cagney.

He was faking for the sake of the kids. He was the toughest of the tough - but he had a heart and he truly loved those kids and his friend.

You have to have seen the previous scene to understand how poignant this scene is. The Priest had asked him to fake being scared lest he become a hero to the street kids. Amazing movie.
  • One of the best endings to any movie ever. Cagney was one of the greats.

I cried when i saw this as a kid. It still makes me shed a tear in my 40's.

"Lets go and say a prayer for a boy who couldn't run as fast as I could." The first time I watched this movie I was on the floor by the end, two feet from the screen just mind blown. It still affects me every time I see it. Cagney could rip your heart out with his acting.

Not knowing if he was really afraid is what really makes this scene powerful love Cagney
  • I believe that Cagney's acting here when begging for his life cannot be beaten. This is the greatest bit of acting that you'll ever see in my opinion.

"What'd ya hear, what'd ya say?" Rocky disgraced his legacy to save those kids, just like he put heat on himself to save his Jerry from getting whacked earlier. Rocky sacrificed everything for his loyalty & friendship to Jerry in the end. 😢 Love this film.
  • That scene brought me to tears when I was a kid and still does at 65...Gagney a real movie Star..

They do not act like this anymore in Hollywood. Amazing James Cagney.

I've been watching this movie here and there for over 50 years. This scene still gets to me
  • Cagney was so ahead of his time as an actor. Imagine him in goodfellas he would have fit the movie perfectly
  • As celebrated as Cagney's brilliant performance is, I always feel that Pat O'Brien is absolutely breathtaking here, the camera move in on his face when her hears Rocky "Turning Yella" is one of the finest pieces of screen acting in the history of America cinema.
  • Cagney Was The King Of Acting Even Though MGM States That It Was Gable 🙏💙😇
  • Don't imagine there are many of us left that watched this in the '50s and '60s. What an incredible morality play for a young man. :>)
  • The strength of this scene is what you dont actually see, its James Cagney delivering the Audio lines, with no view of his face, something an actor relies heavily on. Cagney is simply one of the best actors ever to have delivered a line.
  • "The yellow rat was going to spit in my eye!" Easily one of the greatest lines in movie history, accentuated by Cagney's great acting.
