King’s Troop. The 4 O’ Clock Parade.

The Dismount Parade which takes place daily on the courtyard in front of Horse Guards when the mounted sentries who have been guarding the official entrance to Buckingham Palace are relieved by dismounted sentries.

Also known as 'The Four 'O' Clock Parade' and 'Punishment Parade' it takes place at 16:00 daily when following an inspection by an Officer the mounted guards dismount, then take their horses back to the stables for the night.

History of the Parade
The 4 'o' Clock Parade started in 1894 when Queen Victoria found the entire guard drinking and gambling while on duty and as a punishment, ordered that they had to be inspected every day at 4pm by an officer for the next 100 years!

Although the 100 years finished in 1994 the reigning Queen wanted the parade to continue as a tradition.

Two dismounted sentries will then guard the entrance until 20:00 when the gates to Horse Guards are closed and then one sentry will remain on duty until 07:00 when the gates re-open.

This Captain is well known in the barracks for his sense of humour. He has never demanded respect from any lower ranks, but he surely earned it. If only the tourists could hear some of his comments 🤣🤣🤣
  • I love how the two horses just looked at each other at the beginning of the video as if to say, "Here we go again. I could really go for a sugar cube about now."
  • the Captain at some point likely will be a Colonel because he cares for his troops and their horses. ceremonial units are faced with daily dress up drudgery. Making them smile once in a while is a gift a smart commander can give them.
  • They look magnificent, so proud, serving soldiers as well.
  • My dad was in this regiment royal horse artillery god bless you all my love your son

Right at the start the woman in blue with a straw hat being a right Karen as the police officer asks her to stop taking photos and move away. Like how many times do you have to tell someone? Usual lack of respect from the public.
  • Even one of the horses understood 'at ease', and did so! 😃
  • Nice to see the horses are still listening to their riders. They are both alert...but always have their riders in mind. "Oh, it's time, let's get on with it."

Love this. The really tall soldier on the left was really trying to hold it together by biting his lip as the inspection moved down the line!

So, here's what I think he said to each one in turn 'That one was taller than you', lolol😅🤣😂

The Captain is an orderly Officer, usually a Lt or Cpt, remember this is a working barracks, it just happens to be in central London with an open gate. The size order of the troops is on purpose, the Police officers do long shifts it is hot, they are there for protection not to look good.
  • Orderly Officer, Captain three pips and no gold band on visor, no doubt he will one day be an OF5, and thank you for your pre-empting his promotion.
  • Colonel's do not take the 4 O'clock parade, that is a captain, 3 pips.
  • @orraman5427
If you know what's good for you when the captain cracks a joke you laugh.
  • @johnarrow3354
A Captain, I am sure, but no matter. Good to see that he knows his troop well enough to have a smile.
  • the horses shine so beautifully and the guards are soooooooooooooo smart
  • First.y the Officer is a captain. I’m sure he made it quick due to the heat and keeping his soldiers happy is part of his role.

It's always fun to watch the Royal Horse Artillery. They are only at Whitehall for a little while each year whilst the Lifeguards and Blues and Royals are on vacation. They use horses to pull old artillery guns when they are fired for special occasions
  • @TheByard
Those are the most well-armed crowd control officers I've ever seen. Did enjoy watching the extra effort hard stamp of the feet though.
