Anthrax went to church when they brought their Covid-delayed 40th anniversary tour to Nashville—the Mother Church of Country Music, that is, aka the Ryman Auditorium—on August 15. And PG’s Perry Bean was there to welcome the thrash metal royals and talk with guitarists Scott Ian and Jon Donais, and bassist Frank Bello. Some things have changed in their gear since our earlier Rundown, in 2012, but not Ian’s loyalty to Jackson, which makes the signature-model King V’s he loves to play. Donais is equally stoked on his Dean Exile signature axe, which he also used on the recent Shadows Fall reunion tour. And Bello shared his new signature Charvel bass and EMG pickups. Ian kicked things off, playing his V with a vintage-diner-tile-style finish, his current favorite. Check it out!

So cool to see how Scott Ian is so enthusiastic about music and gear after all these years.
  • @MatzaFTW
Scott’s always had the dopest Jacksons
  • @acidbass
There was a period of a few years there where Scott Ian was everywhere you looked. You could not escape him. He was in everything but the crib.
  • I've seen Anthrax twice and both times they opened for SLAYER, the second time being the last time I ever saw Slayer. Also, R.I.P. to Scott Ian's LEGENDARY father-in-law, MEAT LOAF, who passed away early this year!
  • Frankie is one of my bass idols. Killer tone even with fingers.
  • I had a JB put into my Les Paul 20 years ago and never looked back. Best Rock/Metal bridge pickup around, IMO.
  • @SuperNick090
Love how Scott gets so excited about his tone and equipment he truly is awesome !!!
  • man in 2013 ish i was working at sam ash, Frank came in for a demo and one of his pedals choices we were supposed to have set up for him we didn't have, the guys knew i built fuzz pedals so they asked meI turned them onto the way huge mk2 swollen pickle, frank loved it over the micro phone he thanked me and gave the store a word up. then later that day i got fired from sam ash because i had dropped below the required commision line haha. it was good for me though now I build pedals for a living for the last 10 years and im loving life. frank was such a cool humble normal dude. a very nice guy
  • Frank Bello is the man!! Amazing that a guy who has been in the game since forever is still so passionate about gear and music!! Also, as a bassist, is pretty cool to see him using the EBS multicomp and the Sansamp, which are my two "always on" pedals...

Scott Ian, Dave Mustaine, Eric Peterson, Gary Holt... There's still some truly phenomenal metal riff masters out there from those early thrash metal years - long may that continue!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
  • Interesting that Scott’s using .88 tortex picks these days. I have one of his ‘NOT’ picks that I caught at a show on the Among the Living tour. Don’t know what brand he was using then, but it was incredibly thin and high gloss. His sound was still crushingly heavy. Had the pleasure of meeting the dude on the State of Euphoria tour too. I’ll be seeing them live next week too, almost exactly 35 years since the first time. Damn, where did the time go?!! 🤘
  • @BrandonBames
Man, I'm actually pretty interested in what the Scott Ian modified JB pickup would sound like. I bet it slays
  • @Hell_Inc
Scott’s tone is just flawless. For real
  • @BoyAditya
One of the best rig rundown in 2022. I enjoy it, that I forget that this almost one hour 😁. Amazing Jackson's custom shop and also love Frank Bello.
  • I saw Scott and the band in the departure lounge in some airport in Austria a few years back. And I plucked up courage and got him to sign my boarding pass! Top guy!
  • Thank you Premier Guitar for NOT censoring out the f-bombs!
  • @mithoviel
I love how Scott has maintained the "edge"/bite in his tone, when a lot of other bands have downtuned and lost it.
  • @caa4839
I’m a drummer and I love watching, hearing anyone geek out about their gear. Love it!!!
