INDIA | Modi‘s Emerging Dictatorship?

Published 2024-04-12
Is India becoming a dictatorship? India goes to the polls for pivotal national elections in April and May 2024. As things stand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to secure a third term. Despite the country's strong democratic foundations, there is increasing unease about the implications of Modi’s anticipated victory. Concerns are specifically centred around India's drift towards religious and nationalist authoritarianism, prompting allegations of Modi's potential dictatorial bent. The broader international context reflects a disturbing shift from liberal democracy to authoritarian regimes, with India becoming a focal point of this global trend. The nation's longstanding pluralistic, multiparty system and constitutional protections are perceived to be at risk, indicating a critical juncture for Indian democracy.

The Republic of India, recognised for its vast cultural diversity and complex demographics, is the world's most populous democracy. Its geographical expanse makes it the seventh-largest country globally. India's population is currently around 1.3 billion, with a linguistic mosaic that includes 22 official languages and a religious tapestry predominantly Hindu, but also encompassing Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Governed as a federal parliamentary democracy, India maintains significant centralised control over key policy areas. Historical highlights of India include its ancient civilisation, colonial past, and the post-independence challenges it faced under its leaders, Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter, Indira Gandhi. The Indian National Congress initially dominated politics after independence with a vision grounded in secular socialism. However, the emergence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), advocating Hindu nationalism, has altered the political landscape, especially under Modi's leadership. With a controversial track record and a centralising governance style, Modi's tenure has sparked debates about the state of democracy in India, setting the stage for an election that may define the nation's democratic trajectory.

This is another one of those videos I have long wanted to make. India has such an incredible modern history. But is its reputation as the world's largest democracy really now at risk, as some suggest? Or are fears that Modi is becoming dangerously authoritarian overblown? If so, how should we regard Modi? As always, I look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments below.
  • @pranawkumar510
When Britain went bankrupt after WW2 and nothing was left in India to loot, they left saying I gave you independence 😂. What a joke, I will call it a joke of the century
  • @iknowvator3828
Whole propoganda team and toolkit is working hard to make country not get strong government...... you guys are working hard for your masters
  • Mahatma Gandhi was the greatest dictator in India who imposed Nehru on India by force Nehru after defeating the Congress session votes imposed on the people of India in an undemocratic manner depending only on the choice of Gandhiji.
  • @arghaargha00000

  • @Smiling-Monk
Weak and Fragmented opposition Does not make winning candidate A dictator ??? 😒😒😁
  • @user-cz8hy1hz9x
A strong opposition is essential for a thriving democracy. Unfortunately, India's opposition is weak and fragmented run by a dynastic family.

Again, the context of the Ayodhya temple is left out, either by accident or intentionally. The site where the "mosque once stood" is generally accepted by most Hindus to be the one of the most important sites in Hinduism, as the birthplace of the important deity Rama, and this belief predates the mosque and there is significant evidence to this end. To be clear, nobody is condoning the manner in which the mosque was destroyed or the accompanying violence, but the mosque wasn't just demolished to harass Muslims as is (maybe not deliberately) suggested, as most ordinary Hindus believe this was an ancient pilgrimage site and it is not controversial at all among the Hindu community, but rather suggesting that Hindu beliefs are less important than other faiths definitely is. This shows a clear lack of respect for Hindu beliefs, almost suggesting that Hindus made up the belief that Rama was born there. The Ayodhya dispute is not about Islamophobia, just like the church at Jesus' prophesied birthplace is not Islamophobic. And yes, the mosque that "once stood there" was deliberately built at that site and was thus, called the Masjid-i-Janmasthan (or Mosque at the Birthplace). I apologize if this comes across as too rude, but I feel it is important to point out these things because if not clarified, it can lead to further misunderstanding about the general Hindu public (because most Hindus do support the temple but not due to religious hatred against Muslims).

India gets it's freedom after modi came to power. Before democracy is controlled by one family. Democracy is not a family property it is for people. As an indian i can see the infrastructure development in every sector's. Before you conclud any thing try to see bothsides.
  • The video looks nothing but motivated by Dhruv rathee 😂 whose integrity is highly doubtful. You should come on ground and realize how far you are from the truth and how limited knowledge you have only based on YouTube videos you have seen. CAA is a targeted law for minorities in the neighborhood who left India during partition. Muslims went to Pakistani and Bangladesh because they demanded a Muslim nation. You can’t fathom a single state in United States to have a special privilege over another state as part of your constitution. The same applies to Kashmir . All of these videos seem to be nothing but rhetoric spread by Soros backed Congress. 😂
  • *Nehru dismissed state governments 7 times. *Indira Gandhi dismissed state governments 49 times. *Rajiv Gandhi dismissed state governments 6 times. *Narasimha Rao dismissed state governments 11 times. *Manmohan Singh dismissed state governments 11 times. *After 2014, not a single state government was dismissed. *But Modi is the dictator?
  • Who cares what other think about Modi and BJP, but the truth is that we are going to vote Modi and BJP will rule again. Iss baar 400 paar.
  • @sharadowasdr
For the first thirty years of Indian independence, India had a complete dominance at the hands of the Congress party. After that, the congress violently tried to cling on to that power, sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing, till it collapsed in the 1990s. From 1991 to 2014 we had real multi party democracy and a somewhat even playing field between different parties, an opposition party that had actual teeth. Now we are reverting to the original system of guided democracy, but with an entirely different party at the helm, with a dramatically different set of values.
  • @dramaworld5987
In indias total 28 provinces 17 of them are currently ruled by different opposition parties, no country have this kind of democracy, india is too democratic that it hurts it's growth sometimes.
  • "When Britain AGREED to leave". AGREED? The reflexive hubris of western analysts when it comes to these matters never fails to irritate and amuse all at once. India is no Hong Kong. The British did not AGREE to leave. Their thieving, plundering butt was kicked out by brave Indians.
  • @nitincse
Modi is genuinely popular due to his policies and hard work. The opposition is only offering nepotism and corruption that the young generation despises
