It's like I can listen to the Mountain Goats for years and yet still randomly manage to discover new amazing songs I've never heard before. Absolutely beautiful, thank you John.

How many times do I have to say this is the greatest songwriter of all time?
  • @teminus1
I remember listening to this song nonstop after the most traumatic day of my life. Years later, slowly remembering who I am and embracing who I am now.

since nobody else is saying it: this is an American Music Club song written by the great Mark Eitzel. both the original and Darnielle's version here are crushingly beautiful.

I know your world is full of people who have nothing Who have nothing to give Who have nothing to give I know everyone's trying to sell you the illusion That keeps them in Hell That keeps them down in Hell I'm stuck in my confusion but I know that you'll go far You're chased by the horizon because you know who you are Hope you remember who you are Remember who you are I know they only see you as someone they can use and someone they pick or choose and then blame you when they lose I don't want to be a mistake that only falls off your radar You can't afford a mistake because you know who you are Hope you remember who you are Remember who you are All I can give you is one of my stupid songs and I know it's not the real thing Wish I could give you the real thing I'm lost in the sky, but I would bet upon your star You're alone in this life Unless you know who you are Hope you remember who you are Remember who you are Yeah

I'll be eighteen in exactly two months. This morning I almost cried while planning my first trip without my family...life is moving super fast and I had a really rough year. I wish I could look in a mirror and say "I know who you are", but I still don't. I have plans, but sometimes everything looks blurry and I can't make myself leave my bed. I need to start living, not just letting the time pass, I owe it to the kid I was.

I just graduated and I'm moving to a new city soon, I've been scared about leaving for so long, and this song is just making me imagine what moving day will feel like, my empty room in my house, the packed boxes in my apartment... I'm nostalgic about something that hasn't happened yet aha

just listened to this for the first time.............i feel so understood

Just moved into my college dorm a couple weeks ago, I find this song very much applicable to me at this point in my life. (Gives me serious Ben Folds vibes btw)
  • Somehow I stumbled across the perfect song at the perfect time... I was kinda just... giving up on life I guess... because I got stuck, with no one to pull me out and it just feels like it's not going to get better... I'd like to say this song is helping me in some grand way, but really I just feel a little bit understood... for once. I just want to be myself, but I can't... over time I forgot who I was until I found myself again and now I just can't be myself anymore...

I like John's homage to the Coffeehouse channel on Sirius.
  • @mrmoviemanic1
This would go good for the ending to the new Christopher Robin film.
  • @LordxDutch
Very applicable to me right now. Thank you john for this great song.
