Lee Trevino completed a successful defence of The Open at Muirfield in 1972, producing an incredible display of short game wizardry.

His victory not only broke the heart of Britain’s Tony Jacklin but halted Jack Nicklaus’s hopes of achieving a Grand Slam in a dramatic conclusion, featuring the last three Champion Golfers.

Nicklaus had won the Masters and the US Open but trailed by six shots with a round to play. Jacklin had led after a first round of 69 and he shared the lead at halfway with Trevino, the defending Champion Golfer opening with rounds of 71 and 70.

Jacklin was destroyed by this, he never again contended for a major. Nicklaus was watching the 18th on TV, Lee needing a 4 to win. Jack walked away when Trevino's second shot was still airborne. Somebody asked him why, and he replied 'I saw the swing'.
  • This was golf... which I grew up with... nothing better ever now and before... 😀💕

Trevino won the US Open, Canadian Open and The British Open - what a year for him in 1971! He had a lot of confidence coming into Muirfield!

The Masters was always my favorite tournament but with The Open podcast, these films, & the book "The Greatest Game Ever Played", I am starting to find how much more I appreciate The Open. I look forward to next summer. I hope it is played. Harry Vardon is the real MVP.

  • Trevino was the ultimate competitor. He was never out of a hole.
  • Great to see galleries of all ages being respectful and elated to see the best in the world. Not a single "Get In The Hole" or "Mashed Potato" to be heard.
  • The merry Mex taking over Scotland ❤ brilliant play & talking his way to victory..
  • Trevino laying 4 well off the green on #17, yet chipping in for 5. Jacklin, just short of the green in 2, but making 6. I’m sure Jacklin has yet to get over it...
  • How bout that-- the British Open used to be known as the British Open, even in Great Britain. Great video, thanks for the interesting viewing. Different times.
