In 2014, Keanu Reeves seemingly out of nowhere played a character who would quickly become an action icon: JOHN WICK.

Revenge thrillers are far from new, but somehow this one felt fresh. Watch this video to hear my thoughts on how it pulled that off and what makes it so special! Then let me know your thoughts in the comments!

  • Not many movie franchises can have 4 banger movies that never get old Idc who you are, You get chills when you start hearing about Wick and seeing him destroy everything in his path
  • The reference to westerns is accurate, but if anything this series is even closer to the old b/w samurai flicks, Yojimbo etc., where the old samurai who lives by the code at all costs is pitted against a horde of phonies and sadistic gangsters. The dark colors, Keanu’s hair, and the surreal world-building and violence, and the oriental martial arts, all add to the atmosphere.

You missed something about the first film. Many show Mr. Wick respect, furthermore Mr. Wick is seen letting people live, who are just doing their job. Like Francis, the bouncer at the club. There is another line in the Continental where a woman walks over to him and say "I have never seen you like this...vulnerable." Daisy, the puppy also symbolizes John's hope. When daisy dies, John' s hope also died.

Watched John Wick 4. A send off to fans with extra long running time and to John Wick himself. These films are definitely about Honesty, Loyalty and Respect. A well put together video.
  • Serious props to the stunt team who works on these movies. Those guys and gals broke themselves to make this franchise happen, and they should be celebrated.

John Wick is an amazing film. I love the franchise, but going back to the first film is always great. Thanks for discussing this film Gil, take care!
  • It’s not just that Daisy is a puppy. It’s that she is a physical link to his wife. Daisy represents the life they should have had together. Her death triggers it but John’s rampage is about the injustice of being robbed of his wife.

I would like to add: One of the major themes in all John Wick movies, is: ''your actions have consequences'. Josef killing John Wick's doggie pretty much starts a chain of events that escalates more and more, like a ''Butterfly Effect'', and which ends with the only logical conclusion at the end of Chapter 4.
  • I’ve always viewed John Wick as simply being a man who has nothing left to lose. He lost the love of his life and then his dog. That puppy was really the last physical thing John had left of her, besides memories. John is a man of pure unflinching will and stubbornness. He may have nothing left to lose but he’s still too stubborn to give up.
  • John wick is not a name, it's an emotion. It will become a huge pop culture phenomenon than it has now, like star wars

As far as I'm concerned, the original John Wick singlehandedly saved American action cinema. I love the first three Bourne films, but their influence on action films was most definitely a net negative in the way that it influenced other movies in the way they filmed their action. Quite honestly, I think the Bourne movies were the only ones who did it well and with intention, not just to cut corners like almkst every other action movie since Bourne got big and made its style mainstream. East Asian cinema had examples of quality action films in this time, but i really think American cinema lagged behind because so many people looked at the shaky cam and contant cutting in action scenes as an opportunity to cut corners in a style that had lreviously proven popular without actually understanding how to do it well and why it originally worked. Then comes along John Wick with its smooth and steady camera work and emphasis on high quality action stunt choreography. What people assumed was just gonna be another generic action movie turned out to be a sleeper hit, in no small part because of how it handled its action. Credit to Asian filmakers, because i think it should go without saying that the good examples of modern classic action movies like Oldboy and The Raid showed that action movie fans desperately wanted what thise movies and John Wick would deliver. Since then, I think the influence of John Wick has changed action cinema for the better.

The dark and Sinister undertone of this world reminded me of my favorite Keanu Reeves Constantine
  • John Wick is a force of nature. He is everything we wish we could do to the evil done to all things innocent but cannot do.
  • Just watched JW4 this weekend. I love this whole series. I hope you cover each one. I love when someone shows details I never noticed or tells a backstory I didn't realize was there. I've noticed in Mr. Wick a slow loss of emotion, or loss of the ability to express emotions, over the course of the 4 movies. He's almost a robot by the end. I thought surely we'd see a tear or a wistful look here and there but he just turns to stone.
  • Violence is not the answer. It is a question of when it will be used.

What I love about this franchise is that Vengeance isn't proposed as a taboo that ultimately we shouldn't indulge in.
  • I think everyone was surprised by just how great the original John Wick movie was. I picked it up at a Redbox with middling expectations, and found myself absolutely enthralled. I ended up buying it the following day and I’m super excited to see the Chapter 4 this Sunday!
