STORYLINE:

World leaders were greeted by Russian president Vladimir Putin and his wife Lyudmila in Red Square, Moscow on Monday ahead of the celebrations 60th anniversary of the Allies' victory over Nazi Germany.

Many leaders - including US President George W. Bush, French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder joined war veterans from all over the world near Lenin's tomb for a military parade featuring World War II era tanks and MiG and Sukhoi jets.

Silver-haired veterans wearing multiple rows of gleaming medals on their chests filled the stands set up across from the GUM department store, which had a huge victory banner draped across its long façade.

Soldiers in modern and World War II-era uniforms - infantrymen with metal helmets and red flags topped by Soviet insignia, sappers with dogs, airmen with black padded helmets - marched in tight formation, the slap of their boots echoing across the cobblestones.
