Ancient Egyptian afterlife – What was it like?

Published 2019-09-17
What was the ancient Egyptian afterlife actually like? You’ve probably heard a bit about ancient Egyptian beliefs in an afterlife and how to get there, but what was it actually like once you got there? This video gives you the 3 things you need to know to understand the ancient Egyptian afterlife.

This book by Salima Ikram is my favorite general introduction to death, burial, and afterlife beliefs and practices in ancient Egypt. It is a great introduction to a variety of topics related to the afterlife. I like it so much that I use it as the main text in one of my courses:

If you’re looking for an introduction to the wider subject of ancient Egyptian religion, this book by Teeter is one I love to use when teaching ancient Egyptian religion. It covers many aspects of ancient Egyptian belief and ritual and devotes two chapters to death and the afterlife:

  • An eternity of a life similar to now but just more chill and easy going doesn’t sound too bad really.

I have never heard of the field of reeds until today. In 1993 I was in school where I went to a back room to take a nap, when I laid down I began experiencing some sort of out of body experience I sat up three time and on that third time I was gone, a bright light engulf me and when my eyes adjusted I wasn't in that room anymore. I was in a wooded area sitting on a dock around a small pond. There was a little girl there who guided me out of the woods and when we left all I saw was a field of wheat for as far as I can see. It was very beautiful and peaceful. I was only 17 years old at the time I'm 49 now, thank you for this video it just helped me understand my vision even more.

Afterlife: Afterlife living amongst the stars. Very good and informative information. I can take this and explain it to my friends.🌙

When you love what you do for a living, a better version of this life with work sounds pretty awesome!

If I could have two afterlives, definitely field of reeds (with a lot of shawbtis so I don't have to work more than part time) and also I'd like to ride with the sun god, which would be so cool to me.
  • I consciously prefer to live a better version of everyday life in the 'FIELD OF REEDS'...

Afterlife! I would like to live in the field of reeds.
  • @Caerulis
This video is great because is doesn't focus on one afterlife belief which many other webs/video do.
  • @rvb9411
Afterlife. Thanks for this tho. Much appreciated
  • The third one has achingly more sense because that is the more popular belief other than tending to your harvest for the rest of eternity XD
