Calingiri - Western Australia
Published 2024-04-05
The Calingiri caravan park is small but has excellent facilities. Bookings can be made through the Shire Office.
Other localities within the shire include New Norcia, Bolgart, Yerecoin, Piawanning, Mogumber Wyening, and Gillingarra.
The town gets its name from Calingiri Waterhole that was recorded by a surveyor in 1903.
The spelling of the name has varied somewhat in the past with Calingtry, Kalingiri, The Washpool, Kalingary, Calingarra, Calingtry, Calingiry, Kalingiry being some of the noted different spellings. The name originates with the Aboriginal word for the diamond dove, 'Calingal'.
A formal proposal for a settlement was made in 1914 and the townsite was gazetted in 1917.
A number of the endangered Carnaby's black cockatoos inhabit the area and an area around the town has been classified as an 'Important Bird Area.'
While there isn’t a great deal in the shire to attract tourists, it is a popular area during wildflowerr season and places to look for wildflowers are, Rica Erikson Reserve, Old Plains Road Nature Reserve, Bolgart West Road and the Old Telegraph Road.
In March 1970 the area experienced an earthquake of 5.9 magnitude.
