Expert Analysis on First Biden vs. Trump 2024 Presidential Debate | Amanpour and Company

Published 2024-06-28
In a televised presidential debate, optics may be important, but the devil is in the details. Last night, a fumbling Joe Biden faced a composed Donald Trump in the first live debate of the campaign. Today, Democrats are in damage control mode and Republicans are jubilant. But later, speaking to his supporters at a watch party, President Biden appeared unfazed. According to CNN's fact check, Donald Trump was responsible for more than three times as many falsehoods as Biden. So America faces a choice: a visibly aging man who failed to live up to that moment, or an authoritarian convicted felon soon to face additional criminal trials. Few people are as well placed to discuss current developments, and the prospects for this summer's conventions, than veteran Democratic party strategist Simon Rosenberg and Marc Lotter, who served as special assistant to President Trump and was director of strategic communications in his 2020 campaign. They join Christiane from Atlanta, scene of last night's debate.

The US right now feels like 1932 Germany. Will we go fascist or remain a republic? That is our choice.
  • @kierbaudy
My taxes went up under Trump! Why? Because I’m not a millionaire
  • @JamesOfEarth
Inflation is not a problem specific to the US. Why does this never get pointed out?
  • @timithius
The Republican sycophant was very faithful to the lies and talking points.
  • Rumpists are so full of crap. Blah blah blah, lie lie lie. Nothing was better during Rump's term.
  • @calvingoh9321
CNN should have fact checked Trump on the spot and call him out on any falsehood. They missed the mark there.
  • When asked about trump’s lies the trump advisor replied with more lies and didn’t answer the question. Seriously why have these people on if they are just thee to lie and gaslight you.
  • @cachecow
Well, you have to appreciate his dedication to lying for the party just like a good fascist
  • We were still in the pandemic March of 2021. Guy is definitely a trump man.
  • He has been schooled by republicans and told what to say, he sounds just like Orange man. He needs to be fact checked himself.

A debate wasn't going to help anyone who was still undecided. We've seen T** as president. We've seen Biden as president. What more do you need?
  • Christian - you do a great job and bringing facts to us. I enjoy the pushback on the MAGA spokesperson. The don't give a s**t who they lie to. Please get more specific with these folks on the Trump lies if only you can pick one or two. Example " doctors are pulling 9 month babies from the mother and executing them " - this is beyond hyperbole .
  • If you watch the end of the debate where each candidate walks off stage... One quickly went off with his aids, no wife by his side... the other (slowly) went down off stage with the help of his wife to greet and engage with the two moderators... This speaks volumes.. One of the distinguishing behavioral quality marks of a leader is your engagement with the people of your nation. If the other is so locked into himself that he could not be bothered for a minute to engage with anyone that does not kiss his ring he is unfit to be a leader of a free nation.. People like this are rulers like a king from yesteryear... all they want is recognition and be entertained by the masses.. not to recognize or do anything for them.. This is a concept long out of range with the MAGA crowd... In fact someone made a audible meme of this by putting "eye of the tiger" music to trump leaving stage and a sappy "Celine Dion" song to Biden to try to make him soft and weak all the while missing the strength and dignity that was right in front of you all along....This is why we fight you.. We DO NOT want your version of America...
  • Bidens after debate performance was great! Where was that Joe Biden during the debate? IMO the people around Biden over prepared him and should have just let him be himself. He was too cautious and thinking too much about everything he said instead of just speaking his mind
  • lol of course in the middle of a pandemic that trump botched inflation was low and gas was cheap; that's what led to the problems we now have, smh.
  • @floridacoder
A gaffe or mistatement is much different than a lie. Trump lies constantly.
  • @katiem6773
Like Trump's not ivory tower. The man uses a gold toilet.
