  • My emigrant JOHN Stansall/Stancil sailed from England to Va in 1683 on a 4-yr indenture. I have no idea where he worked out the 4 years. Sometime afterwards he evidently settled in Nansemond County as I next find him in the 1704 Nansemond County Quitrent list as owning 500A. I like to think he was friends with the Indian tribe. I would love finding out more about your Nansemond Indian tribe. Thank you very much for telling your story. FYI: sometime between 1704 and 1709 Stancil moved maybe 20 miles south into Chowan County, NC. He died there in 1713, age 51. I believe he was killed in the Tuscarora War.
  • Today is November 24th. When did Native American Month begin? 😐 Tomorrow is Indigenous Peoples Day, I celebrate that.

Funny I went to Nansemond River High school (Warriors) in the 90’s and nobody ever taught us a darn thing about our history. Public schools what do we expect?

It's such a shame that families ended up not caring about ancestry as they should, especially those of us who weren't immersed in tribal culture. Then of course, there was prejudice even within the tribes, not wanting to allow people to identify who didn't "look" a certain way. I have Nansemond roots on my mother's side and Haliwa-Saponi on my father's. Most of my relatives have NO clue as to the connections. It seems that I am going to be the one to bring that history together...........
