  • Shout out to Sean and my dudes from the UGA philosophy department. It was very cool to see y'all again! šŸ¤˜šŸ¤˜

Well, sometimes you wanna support the new bands but you don't have to like all the bands. I've been there before.
  • Great t-shirt and awesome openning statement. I always do my best to be there from the start and give all bands a chance. I too discovered amazing music like that, most recently Aeternam from Canada. It doesn't always work but it worth it. Non Serviam šŸ˜‰šŸ¤˜
  • Whew that was an honest review dawg. Hopefully the band takes it positively & maybe tweaks their approach.

I saw Capra and Escuela Grind on Saturday night. They put on a really good show: high energy, the audience was really into them, moshing banging their heads, etc. If you get a chance to see either band, I recommend them highly!

I once had a dubstep DJ open for an alt metal band. Just wasn't what anyone expected to hear open. Everyone was just standing around wondering what to do. He was a nice kid though, he knew he didn't fit in with what the headliner was and thanked the crowd for listening to him and giving him a chance.

RIFF OF THE WEEKā€¦ Always go to the openers. I found some great bands. Zeal and Ardor, dead lock, acid bath, fair to midland, disarmornia mundi, hanging garden, anathema to name a fewā€¦ the dudes are awesome. Even Manuel from zeal side project Birdmask is great. Awesome singer.. On a side note John, I discovered these guys too as an opener.. let me know your thoughts on it. Deadlock/Wolves - losers ballet. Itā€™s like Disney came out with a metal band but I dig lol

Midi intros, i commented something else. I thought that opening sounds you meant band intro starting haa got it! Aarruugghhhhh!!
  • @hydrophobia936
I've been to a couple shows where I only care about the opener, buy some merch from them, and leave early lol.

It's cool seeing pics from the decibel magazine tour, I was there during their stop in Dallas!

There's definitely going to be good and bad shoots. Don't let it bother you. You're awesome!

Went to see Phil Anselmo & the Illegals at small venue (Waiting Room-Omaha Ne.) with several forgettable openers, or so I thought. Walking outside to burn one down between acts right as Phil announced to the crowd about "the heaviest, hardest shit you ever seen" before the one man project of Author and Punisher started playing. Fuck the weed as crowded right up front to see the crazy music this dude jammed out. Great artist. Thanks Jon. Minds are like parachutes, they work best when open, lol.

Luckily Iā€™m usually easily pleased. But it definitely becomes uncomfortable when I just want to walk away, because I never want to be perceived as obviously disappointed. Usually only local small venue situation. Always been curious, donā€™t headlining bands occasionally have a say in the openers??

I really enjoyed Shy, Low and bought some of their merch. I hated the emo band with the too-long name. While I love The Ocean, Iā€™m not a fan of backing tracks and I think they use too many.

Facelift era Alice in Chains opened the Slayer , Megadeth , Anthrax tour like 92 i think my friend Echo yelled "you suck" 20 times before i left the seats and went down to the floor. It was a bad pick for a opener genre wise but probably widened their audience.
  • We've all seen bad openers. Here's some of mine: Nile: We all love Nile, especially us Greeks go berserk because of George, but the opener was... bad. They had 3 openers, a good death metal band I can't really recall came first. Nothing insane, but solid. The second band was absolutely shit. It was one of those whiney metalcore projects... it even had autotune. I hated them. Then the third opener came: Rapture. I cannot express how much I love this band. Such incredible death/thrash, I loved it. I've seen them one more time, and even got a signed CD. Gonna see them again and again, since they're local, check them out! No need to say anything about Nile, we all know it was insane Agnostic Front: This was my first (and only) hardcore gig I've been to. First band was just insane, especially the singer was so energetic, I loved them. So groovy, incredible. But I forgot their name, and can't remember them... they weren't even listed on the flyers... Then the second band came up. Boring guitars, bad vocals (mixed with horribly pronounced english. I get it, some people over 40 can't speak english here, so why do you stick with it with that bad accent? It was so... bad. I was just waiting for the headliner to start (and when they came they killed it) Metal Solid@rity Festival: It was a home for anti-fascist metal bands. No genre specific, but there was no black metal. Plenty of interesting bands, from various genres absolutely killing it. And the cringey whiney metalcore band was here again. Everyone was just waiting for them to finally stop, but they just kept going on and on... Gra/Yoth Iria So, first band was a black metal band... with breakdowns. They played 3 of their own songs and a cover of Transilvanian Hunger. It was very boring, if I'm being honest. Sad were after, and they killed it. And obviously, Gra and Yoth Iria were incredible!

On sound. Some of it might be the band making life hell for the sound guy, but in some ways a good sound guy can advise them if they are willing to learn. In the cases where the "big band" places restrictions and sabatoges the openers is doing their show a disservice and I do not agree with that approach. Speaking of "the show", the ticket price includes all bands on the bill and the headliner was very likely once an opener themselves at a time in their ascendance. If the audience can support live music and give the full bill a good listen, and the marquee band doesn't handcuff them, we have a lifecycle of encouraging the market for live music.
