Simbang Gabi is one of the oldest Filipino Christmas traditions, where the faithful gather for nine days of Masses, prayers to the Child Jesus, and festive gatherings — typically held in the early morning or evening.

Nuestra Señora de Guia (Our Lady of Guidance) is a 16th-century image of the Blessed Virgin Mary depicted today as the Immaculate Conception and widely venerated by Filipinos. The 'Anales de la Catedral de Manila' recounts how in 1571, the crew of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi discovered a group of natives worshiping a statue of a female figure in what is now in Ermita, along the easter shores of Manila Bay. It today's image (of molave hardwood) is the same one, then it symbolize the conversion of Filipinos from animism to Christianity.
