The trumpet player for this band (and Sly's GF) was Cynthia Robinson. She was my upstairs neighbor for 10 years in Sacramento, CA(1999-2009). We stayed in touch for a while after I moved away and made plans, but they kept falling through. I wish they wouldn't have; she passed away from cancer in 2015. I'll never forget her.

"Dance to the Music" and "Hot Fun in the Summertime" is some funky music from Sly and the Family.

It is hard to overstate how influential this band has been. And nothing will cause me to jump up and shake my middle-aged backside faster than “If You Want Me to Stay.” Play it at your own peril - spontaneous stank face and uncontrollable chair boogie is guaranteed.

As a bass player, of course I love this. Love Sly & The Family Stone. Probably my favorite from them is "Everyday People." The positive message that never gets old and is needed more now than ever. Politicians divide us. Do not allow that.

Gotta hit up 'I Want to Take You Higher'.. major stank-face vibes

Many more even better songs from these guys. "Everyday People," "Stand," "Hot Fun in the Summertime." Great music from the late 60s into the early 70s.
  • That verse you say you heard is brilliantly written by Sly as it is a list of many of their other hits songs. Dance to the Music..Everyday people....Sing a Simple Song.....etc.

I didn't realize Rhythm Nation took the guitar from this song, but since you said it, it's so obvious!!👍 🎶🎧🎸🎷🎹🥁

Dance to the Music is another great song by Sly.

Fun fact... Rose stone toured with Elton John and sang backup. The lady can SANG!

This was one of those jams that labeled the 70s as the Funk decade. And, yes, many of Sly's famous songs were about the civil rights movement - a movement that still lives on to thIs day.

FYI: Bassist Larry Graham's brother, Dennis is rapper Drake's father. Sly Stone is their cousin.

I'm 75 years old this is the first major Rock group I saw a live back in Portland Maine and they put on a great show as well as great music

Sly bassist Larry Graham literally invented slap bass on this track!! A year later (71) Sly & Family released a stretched out, slowed down even nastier version " Thank You For Talking to Me Africa" different enough practically a different song. 💯 worth reacting to. The bass on this version is next level ! BTW was I whom suggested this, Superfly & Drift Away, Ballad of Dwight Frye. All sorely overlooked on reaction channels. All masterpieces!

Sly and The Family Stone's run of albums from Life, Stand, There's a Riot Goin' On (all 5 stars), and then Fresh is mind blowing and mind bending. The fact that they seem to be more of a footnote today, rather than a household name is downright criminal. Their influence is inestimable.
