Kiishik Naakniiganke - Cedar Mat Making

Published 2018-08-02
This short film documents a community project of weaving cedar mats with Waganakising Odawak, the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. Cedar weaving is a centuries old tradition that has been disrupted in recent decades among many other traditions but here is one of the many contemporary revitalizations of these old ways.

The narrator of this short film is trying to raise funds for a dedicated weaving studio intended to preserve and pass on these old traditions. Please visit her Kickstarter page,

  • So cool. Wish you guys made more videos. You're so lucky to be living the dream. I can't wait to do cedar weaving with my grandkids. Black ash later on when they're bigger and hands are tougher. I'm stock piling splints.

Love to hear you are preserving something beautiful and special. I am native but live in the city and never had the opportunity to learn to make baskets. But with videos like this I am learning. Thx❤
