I was looking for an economic solution for a large bird feeder to be placed at our land. We are relatively new land owners and recently had the land converted to an agriculture except (wildlife) status. This is an option in Texas to keep ranch land natural even if you are not raising livestock. Our exception is focused on songbird protection and promotion, and one of the requirements to qualify is to have large bird feeders throughout the property. Most manufactured options are very expensive and were a little too big for our needs. Bird feeders you buy from local stores are mostly meant for backyards and are smaller in scale. So, I decided to build one with some simple parts.

That turned out really nice. I like the fact that it will probably last a long time. That thick PVC is strong.

We've made (husband actually =]) several of these. I vote on putting in just the BOTTOM 4 feeding perches. The birdies will land on the top 4 perches and as soon as the feeder is half empty, those birdies are screwed--so to speak. Also, if you glue the bottom on, there's no way to thoroughly clean out the damp, moldy seed? Otherwise, excellent!

My husband made one very similar years ago. For the perches, you can make 2 holes. The 2nd hole is ⅛" just below the top one so, BEFORE putting the top on, you put the ziptie IN the bottom hole and OUT the top hole--it's very secure then. These PVC feeders would have lasted for 100 years had it not been for SQUIRRELS chewing at the pvc =\

What a creative idea, should make it difficult on the squirrels and raccoons, we will try it!

Sorry, I didn't see that you're in a dry, less "moldy" part of the country! That probably makes a difference =]
