One kilometer range? Good luck with that. When I was a kid, I built a similar circuit that would switch a relay on when the beam was interrupted, and off again when interrupted a second time. I placed this across my bedroom door so when I entered my bedroom, the lights automatically came on, and when I left, the lights would shut off. It didn't take long for my sisters to realize they could place their hand through the beam then run away leaving me in the dark.

These build types (no perfboard, just component to component) always amaze me, and I have respect for the folk that show this. I do notice that their soldering irons are always in bad shape. I mean terrible. But I am impressed with the rest of it. Notice sometimes they cut away and have added solder. Not surprising.
