Coming up an interview with a hilarious singer-songwriter Stephen Bishop who is revered for his lyricism and style… on a song that became his biggest solo hit: “It Might Be You.” But he didn’t write it, even though he was one of the most prolific writers of his time. But the blockbuster movie Tootsie that made the song its theme wanted Stephen for his amazing voice… He actually got a mention in the opening credits as SUNG BY… “It Might Be You” went to #1 and was nominated for an Oscar, which ironically lost to a song from a film directed by a guy who would hire him to write the theme for his next movie. But this time he had someone else sing it and it got him nominated for an Oscar again…this time as the writer. Then years later it became the go-to karaoke track for people in the Philippines… it actually became one of the most popular songs ever in that country! The story from Stephen Bishop is next on the Professor of Rock.

So it’s time for another edition of our series Revelations, where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs, giving us inside information and little-known stories about their biggest hits. From a song’s origins to legacy, you’ll get rare insights that only the artists themselves can give. For today’s episode, we’ve got another great one. It’s with one of the funniest guests I’ve had on this show… He made his bones with his smooth yacht rock classic on and on. I’m talking about Eric Clapton’s favorite Singer-songwriter Stephen Bishop… Known for his witty lyrics and sensitive song craft, Bishop was hired to sing the theme for the 1982 Blockbuster Tootsie, It Might Be You which was written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, the Oscar-winning lyricists behind "The Way We Were" and "The Windmills Of Your Mind," and jazz musician Dave Grusin.

Stephen Bishop admitted that singing the song was an assignment,” the producers wanted his tender voice and they paid him well for it. When he watched the movie it wasn’t edited yet and was four hours long and had a bunch of temp music by Kenny Loggins who was Bishop’s friend. The song went to #1 on the AC Charts and #25 on the Hot 100 but in the streaming era, it’s become bigger than many of the biggest hits of that year. It’s definitely one of the best love songs of the 80s. And it was nominated for an Oscar for best original song and Bishop performed it at the 1983 ceremony but it lost to."Up Where We Belong" from An Officer And A Gentleman and ironically Taylor Hackford, who directed it used Bishop's song "Separate Lives" in his movie White Nights a couple years later but had Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin sing it...it was a #1 hit on the Billboard charts and also gave him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

Poll: What is your pick for the GREATEST SONG from a movie or movie soundtrack?
  • @BigD53
At our wedding reception, my wife and I had our first dance to this song. 37 years later and we're still going strong.
  • @chrisdepoy3370
I'll never forget Belushi smashing Bishop's guitar in Animal House - a great cameo.

What an honor to have the cast of Singin' in the Rain reading your category's nominees, even if the win didn't come through. 😉
  • Always liked his song " Save It For A Rainy Day ". Down to earth person too.

Nothing like having a great woman in your life! Been with mine 24 years (Married 17). Have no idea where I’d be without her.
  • @tnrodgers
Bishop is pure talent. He deserves the Oscar now doubt. For me it’s still On and On. Thanks Adam!

I love Stephen Bishop. The tootsie soundtrack was great. Great movie, too. One of my favorites by him was a 70s song called Save her for a rainy day. Bishop is a classic artist. Thanks for covering him.

“Lying on the sand Watching sea birds fly Wishing there would be Someone waiting home for me Something's telling me it might be you” The painful longing brought to life by the lyrics of a good love song…this stanza is one of the best of them.

Those glasses he wore at the 83 Oscars are kinda pimp! Might need to see if Zenni can make a pair like that, (in black of course 🤘🤘). Awesome interview Prof, he is hysterical!!
  • @catherine6653
I remember this song when I was a kid, also. I like it because the melody and vocal make me calm. The first few notes = instant calm.
  • @carolmartin4413
Just another example of the greatness of the music of the 80's! ❤
  • @toonswap8511
Thumbs up if you want to meet Adam's wife on the show.

I've recently been rediscovering artists like Bishop and Rupert Homes via the yacht rock station on SXM. These are artists that, while I knew and loved their hits I heard growing up, I never thought that I would be chasing their not so known songs down. But here I am doing that very thing. Some pretty cool gems are just waiting there for people to find.
  • @BillGraper
As a ballad lover, I approve this song 💯%.
  • In a bit of coincidence, a radio disk jockey in my area on V100 - WVAF - 99.9 FM, Charleston WV, named Steve Bishop played songs by Stephen Bishop that sounds so much like his name. He started working at the station in November, 1980 on Election Day when Ronald Reagan was elected as president, and surprisingly, in 2024, he's still working there as a disk jockey. His career on the radio lasted way longer than the singer's charting career.
