What Should We Do When Commentators Don't Agree? - Gary DeMar (2023 Conference)

Published 2023-05-02
The defense of any biblical belief is contingent on what the Bible says about that belief. All students of the Bible often turn to experts on biblical interpretation. In many cases, they do not agree. Their disagreement can change the meaning of a text that can have an impact on the doctrine itself.

This lecture was presented at the 2023 Spring Bible Conference held by Berean Bible Church each year in late April. Keep an eye on our main website for details, and/or sign up to our mailing list to get updates when the conference gets close.

Full Preterists fail to see that a thousand years separates the defeat of Satan from the defeat of the enemies of Christ (harlot, beast, false prophet), all who are empowered by Satan. The generic way a thousand years is used in the text means that it is symbolic of a much longer period of time. A thousand years is the minimum. Everything prior to the thousand years originated in the first century period of, "shortly come to pass," but the final defeat of Satan happens at the end.

I never heard any sermon in south Africa concerning AD 70. We don't have any books concerning pretrism. Until years ago i went to the local library and found a book by Gary called END TIMES FICTION. I believed in the RAPTURE. I read Gary's book countless times checking out the scriptures. Then I realized I was on the wrong path. I also stumbled upon Don Preston sermons on u tube. I always wondered why isn't Gary a full preterist like Don. Now I'm glad to see him a full preterist. Always a joy to listen preterist view. These guys have really widened my knowledge of the Bible and caused me challenge many Christians.

Is Matthew 10:23 about 70 AD, or is Matthew 10:5-23 about the time period when the Gospel was taken "first" to the Jews, as Paul said in Romans 1:16? Matthew 10:23 is about Christ's "coming" as the King riding on a donkey as predicted in Zechariah 9:9. How do we know it is not about 70 AD? Acts 10:36-38 proves the Gospel was "published" throughout Judea before 70 AD. It did not take the disciples of Jesus forty years to take the Gospel to the Jews before the Gospel was taken to the Gentiles. Peter took the Gospel to the house of Cornelius after the time period found in Matthew 10:5-23, or Peter disobeyed Christ’s commandment in Matthew 10:5-7. ====================================================================== Jesus Foretells Destruction of Jerusalem (subtitles from eSword) Luk 21:20 "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. (Mat 24:15 "Therefore when you see the 'ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand), (Look at the reference to Hanukkah in John 10:22, if you want to know what the Jews of Jesus time understood about Antiochus Ephiphanes attacking the city during 167 BC, when his forces killed thousands of Jews, and stopped the sacrifices. Those two things also happened during 70AD.) Luk 21:21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her. (Mat 24:16 "then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.) Luk 21:22 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. Luk 21:23 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. (See also Luke 23:28-31.) (Mat 24:19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! ) Luk 21:24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. (Almost all Bible scholars agree that the first part of the verse above is about 70 AD. At the end of the verse we find a period of time known as “the times of the Gentiles”. In Romans 1:16 Paul said the Gospel was taken “first” to the Jews, and then to the Greeks (Gentiles). We are now in that time period when the Gospel is being taken to the whole world. Paul also referred to this time period in Romans 11:25, and Acts 28:28. In the verses that follow we find the future Second Coming of Christ. ) The Coming of the Son of Man Luk 21:25 "And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; (Mat 24:29 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.) Luk 21:26 men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Luk 21:27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. (Mat 24:30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.) Luk 21:28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near." (Mat 24:33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors!)

The Apostles Creed states that God the Father created heaven and earth, but scripture says God the Son/the Word/Jesus created all things both visible and invisible and that NOTHING has been created that was not created through/by Him in John 1 and Colossians 1. I'm not saying throw out the Apostles Creed, but it needs to be reworded to be consistent with scripture. This is one more thing that goes along with what Gary is saying. The church seems to put tradition above scripture sometimes and treats tradition as sacred while claiming Sola Scriptura.

I think those who claim Jesus is Yahweh of the Old Testament or that God is a trinity really need to think about what apostle John is saying about Jesus having come in flesh. This is a major deal as he says all who deny Jesus come in flesh (an actual man) is antichrist. To say Jesus was something more than man (as in God himself born of a woman, a divine pre-existent being re-incarnated as a man..etc) detracts from his greatness since all the things he accomplished would have been easy for him. This also detracts us from realizing the heights men can rise when inspired by God. How are we to follow Jesus and become like him if he wasnt an actual 100% man but was “God having come down in flesh”? But he was sinless and we can’t be? Not true. Jesus showed us how. Job was said to be a blameless (perfect) man, so was Noah. The Lord Jesus became divine when his God and Father resurrected him from the dead and sat him at his right hand in heaven giving this man All authority in heaven and earth from that day on “today I have begotten you” This is our same hope, the resurrection into glory and becoming true begotten children of God like our Lord Jesus, Gods very firstborn from the dead
