This video was taken in Papua, Indonesia. We saw it happen five or six times before we finally managed to capture it on video. The horsehair worms infect the prey and modify the brain chemistry in such a way that when the parasite is ready to emerge, the victim commits suicide in water. The worm then emerges, lays eggs in the water, and the circle of life continues. Read the wikipedia article on Nematomorpha for more information.

It is absolutely insane that parasites of these lengths can fit in insects

It's insane to think about a parasite that controls the hosts mind and leads it to suicide. What an incredible world we live in

Those Praying Mantis are fascinating creatures. It's strange the way they turn their head and stare at you.The give a sense of intelligence. They make a good insect pet. They are king of the insects and will eat other pests.

I learned that when the worms wrap around each other they are reproducing. Instantly reproducing. Wow 😯

Fun fact: These are called Horsehair Worms, and when they emerge they are done growing and fully matured. Unless the host drowns, they usually live on just fine after passing them. I imagine it is like taking a huge and satisfying crap after feeling bloated and constipated for a couple months. They weren't attacking the mantis, the mantis was just in the way as they were trying to coil around one another get hot and heavy and make bebes. They were basically done with the mantis.
  • If only all humans will help each other out this way and more, the world would be a better place
  • Thank you for sparing that mantis' life! I was worried. I am gonna like and subscribe!
