So all I have to say is FINALLY. Today we hear from Foreigner’s legendary vocal and guitar tandem of Lou Gramm and Mick Jones that set the 70s and 80s ablaze with over a dozen rock standards and some of the biggest albums of their time. And they’ve finally been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. One of the biggest snubs ever. Today they tell us the story of one of their greatest rock songs: Hot Blooded. Foreigner first played it in front of a massive crowd at Cal Jam. They blew up the massive festival and were cheered on to do something unprecedented at a festival. Play an encore, but they had already played all their songs. So they went out and played a new one they had been writing it wasn’t even finished so the singer had to repeat the 1st verse over and over. When it was over the tens of thousands were singing every word… They knew it would be a smash and the rocker was so scorching hot that the guitar solo actually started the legendary guitarist’s amp on fire. The story of the classic Hot Blooded from the 2 principles of this band is next on Professor of Rock.

For those who feel the need for a ‘pull no punches’- passion-charged rocker- let’s get right down to business and CRANK UP ONE OF THE BEST…. ”HOT BLOODED" by FOREIGNER.

“Hot Blooded” was the fiery lead single from Double Vision…the 10-track aftershock that followed Foreigner’s earthshaking debut record. The band seemingly came out of nowhere to become one of the most successful rock bands. Foreigner was a powerful force right out of the chute when they broke onto the scene in ‘77. The self-titled album yielded two Top-10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100- “Feels Like the First Time” at #4, and “Cold as Ice” at #6.

“Long, Long Way From Home," the third single release, was no slouch either, climbing to #20. After Foreigner’s debut LP sold more than 5 and a half million units, it's not surprising that expectations were EXTREMELY high for their 2nd album…Double Vision. To germinate new material for Double Vision, Lou, and the band would often congregate at Mick’s apartment in NYC, and work on songs.

During one writing session, Lou remembers Mick playing a really cool riff that made him shush every other sound in the room. Mick thought it was “just another riff,” but Lou was smitten, and began to sing along to Mick’s crunchy groove. Lou’s idea was for the song to be a bolt of lustful energy with a big amorous chorus. What he came up with was... “Hot Blooded:” Lou was 'feeling it' alright…When he cracked the chorus for “Hot Blooded", Lou & the band were 'jumping off the walls', and the verses began to flow. “Hot Blooded” is a bit ‘tongue in cheek,” but it gets right to the point…. The song is unmistakably about meeting ladies on the road.

Lou Gramm is easily one of the top 5 singers of rock. Just amazing.
  • Fans of the great 1980s TV series "WKRP in Cincinatti" will recall a hilarious scene in which Les Nessman puts on a toupee, triumphantly putting on the toupee with "Hot Blooded" playing loudly.

I think it was 85ish and a friend and myself got off of work late. We knew Foreigner was playing that night at a venue, we were late getting there. There was absolutely no one out side. We all towards the doors just hoping for ticket but knew we were screwed. Then this guy approaches us and ask if we were looking for tickets. We said of course. He said he only had two tickets left for $40 bucks each and that they were supposed to be from row seats. We bought the tickets knowing we got screwed. We went to the door and they let us in (well at least they were real tickets. We’re in! We continue walking to the floor and was stopped by an usher, he looked at the tickets and let us onto the floor then proceeded to escort us to the front row. We were absolutely ecstatic. Who would have thunk it. Robin Trower opened the concert. Great memories, Great concert!

If Paul McCartney is saying Foreigner needs to be inducted, it's time!

@Professor of Rock, this one's for you. Growing up the hard way, I wanted to be a juke box hero. Spent my night life dreaming of being a star rider, being a long long way from home and getting the girl on the moon. I was so hot blooded I had double vision. Just a dirty white boy who thought "I want to know what love is". Turns out, she was a woman in black who liked to play head games. She was absolutely cold as ice. It was a love in vain, and now I'm down on love because love has taken its toll. Women. Although that was yesterday, every time I hear these songs, it feels like the first time. Thanks again, Adam for all you do.
  • Lou Gramm is phenomenal and he can sing the phone book and make it sound amazing what a vocalist
  • @scottburton9701
I hope Foreigner gets inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame-They certainly deserve it.
  • @DC8091
hell ya!!! One of the original party anthems that still blows the roof off, & always will! The fact it set a Marshall on fire is rock n roll gold!!
  • @martineldritch
Couldn't swing a dead cat back in the day without hitting a Foreigner song on the radio. Late 70s/early 80s was the Mick Jones double guitar invasion between Foreigner and The Clash 😄
  • @T00LF00L
Every single band you feature deserves to be in the rock and roll hall of fame, and it shouldn’t take them a lifetime to finally get in.
  • @sharonmattox
LOVE LOVE LOVE Foreigner!! Lou Graham is one of the greatest rock singers of all time!! 😍
  • @smitty810
A few years ago I was drinking by the fire on a Friday night listening to some Foreigner. Apparently I drunk emailed the R&R Hall of Fame with one sentence "How in the hell is Foreigner not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?" Forgetting I had sent the email they responded that following Monday with a long BS multi paragraph answer of their nominee process etc etc. Needless to say I'm a happy camper today. Get out and vote for this great band!
  • @IheartDogs55
Foreigner was a band that consistently got me on my feet, enthusiastically dancing & singing along. It's one of the best bands of the rock era!
  • @johngrevas8819
Foreigner and Peter Frampton for sure should get in this time.
  • @netgnostic1627
RRHoF still has a Jethro Tull problem too. Glad Foreigner is going in.
  • @trinaq
"Hot Blooded" is definitely one of the catchiest tunes of Foreigner's catalogue, I can't help but sing along every time I hear it. I also dig "Cold as Ice," "Jukebox Hero" and "I Want to Know what Love is."
  • @lonewolfrcs1331
as part of GEN X i can speak for all of us we had the best music of any generation
  • @VIDEOHEREBOB
Hot Blooded is one serious vocal. His chesty tone quality on those C5s always blew me away. Lou is a singer of a whole other caliber. For lack of a better word, an idol of mine.
