The problem is that the US claims to be 'fighting for democracy' but acting like a global dictator in practice..
  • @smddsi
That a US senator says, about China, "they are eating our lunch" shows the immense scorn of this guy for Latin American countries. If I were american I would be ashamed and if latino-american I would feel insulted. This alone could explain the failure of US policy.

As a European I DESPISE American foreign policy. They are so self-righteous it's just grotesque.
  • @dikeson
“Brazil is too big to be in someone’s backyard”
  • As a Latin American it pains so much, *so much*, that the world powers talk about us as lunch, dispensable, and irrelevant trading commodities

As a Brazilian, I have only one thing to say, the USA sees us as a colony, China sees us as a future ally.

I’m from the USA and being politically informed on an international level since I was a teenager, I have always found the foreign policies toward South and Central America destabilizing, always backing the wrong side of issues, no matter which party holds power. The is mainly true bc corporations have too much influence. This means the US government makes its foreign policy based on the financial interests of those corporations and then back it with its military presence. This has caused regimes like the Christiani government in El Salvador to brutalize its people, while we arm and train their death squads. And that’s only one example with the Reagan administration’s help.

Last time two superpowers began looking at Latin America as a power struggle to gain more support we had a wave of US-supported coups and dictatorships. In Argentina, up to 30.000 people went missing due to the will of keeping other ideology off their "backyard", one of many countries affected by Plan Condor to keep the Soviets out. Over 80.000 people confirmed killed or missing, according to surveys found in Paraguay. Almost two decades of repression and fear in the south cone. It does seems history's destined to repeat.

As a Brazilian, I can say the US has already lost this battle. Latin Americans have always felt undermined and controlled by the American governement, while China has a friendly approach, treating our countries as equals. The question I ask myself is whether the US will accept it peacefully or destabilize our democratically elected governments.

As a Latin American, I can say that most of us would choose China over the US out of spite, the US refers to us in a dehumanizing way, for example calling us their backyard, also the US has a bad record with us, many coups, rigged elections and interference.

Famous American brands are disappearing from Brazil: Ford left the country after a century of production. Apple registers first loss in sales in Brazil in 2023. And even the traditional North American allies: Toyota (Japan), Volkswagen (Germany), Hyundai (South Korea) are paralyzing production. The consumer electronics market is dominated by China.
  • Referring to Latin America as their “lunch” shows the level of disrespect the US has.

I'm a Jamaican who has lived in the US for 24 years, and Cuba is only 90 miles from us. We love Cuba and the Cuban people. America has strangled the Cuban economy for the last 40+ years, and that couldn't break them, and America has sponsored the worst and bloodiest election in Jamaican history, by giving the opposition guns, because the other side were close to Cuba. America has done nothing but brain drain my country, and explore it for cheap labor, now I can proudly say that China has been building much needed infrastructure in our country, and its a good look. America actually took notice as to what has been happening, and wanted to make their presence felt, so they sent an admiral of the navy to deliver their message. Not a diploma, someone from the military. Message received loud and clear, and we are pressing ahead full steam. We may live in your backyard, but the land that we are on is ours.

It’s “whatever is good for America is good for America, at everyone’s expense”
  • @pjr779
While North Americans can't decide whether we are their "lunch" or their "backyard" (or both), China keeps coming to us with real proposals. Obviously China has its own interests and a somewhat obscure agenda, but they have invested a lot in our country and, above all, they have treated us with respect.
  • Latin America is not the US' or anyone's backyard. No place should be labeled this, but I got what you meant given the context. Great video! Your channel is getting a lot of views recently and I'm glad that more people in the USA are listening to you.
  • The US Calling independent countries their "backyard" is enough explanation..
