This season, Thomas Frank has set Brentford up in a 3-5-2. As you’d expect from a newly promoted team, Brentford are a very direct side and are quite happy using their physicality to gain advantages over the opposition. They create a lot of chances from open play through crosses, either from their wing backs, supporting midfielders or even strikers who have pulled wide. Without the ball Brentford defend in a compact 5-3-2 before pressuring the ball in a man to man scheme and if they can force turnovers, they’ll look to counter attack quickly. Whilst Brentford are well drilled, these tactics aren’t what makes them special.
Also owned by Matthew Benham, Brentford have taken a similar approach to FC Midtjylland and use analytics and data to find small advantages that they can use. Because of this, Brentford look to make the absolute most of dead ball scenarios. From corners, free kicks and even throw-ins, Thomas Frank has strategies that have been developed through mathematics and probabilities, stationing players in areas where the ball is most likely to land. Frank also spends time coaching inspired routines that catch their opposition off guard. Already this season Brentford have scored set piece goals against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and David Moyes’ West Ham United. But Brentford have also weaponised second balls and actively look to create 50/50 challenges with their opposition by putting the ball into areas of the pitch they’ve loaded with players. This generally gives them a numerical and positional advantage over their opponents which sees them win a lot of second balls.

Key to this strategy is the distribution of the goalkeepers: David Raya and Alvaro Fernandez, but centre forwards Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo are also important players. Toney operates as a target man and has already aerially dominated Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip this season, two of the Premier League’s best aerial defenders. Brentford play up to the striker and surround him with players who can receive the knockdown or challenge for the second ball, whilst strike partner Mbeumo runs beyond Toney as he looks for the flick-on.

A very well drilled and disciplined team with a range of peculiar strategies, Thomas Frank’s Brentford aren’t just in the Premier League to make up the numbers, they’re here to stay. Where do you think Brentford will finish this season? 🤔

You don't need a huge transfer budget to do well in the EPL. You can do well if you have excellent scouting, coaching and player development.

After exploiting Arsenal tactics and leading them to stalemate against Brighton and Crystal Palace, Dave may lead Brentford to relegation scrap if Gaffers of other teams are watching.🤔🤔🤔

Very impressed. They’re definitely not a pushover. All teams are wary of the Bees, and I think that if they can replace Toney during his ban with a decent striker the Bees will be up there with the best of them next season……HOWEVER all teams have bad patches and Brentford will too!
