Retired Navy K9 handler here. When I was in Afghanistan, I made these for the kids I was sent to protect (I was oldest active duty handler in country) and they never heard of these. They actually enjoyed them and the bread I baked. Thanks Cookie for the supplies you lent me!! And thank you for this video. I enjoyed every second of it. 😁👍
  • Someone protect this man. I like how he cooks, chats and has humour and also makes us learn stuff. 11/10 cooking show

My mom called cornmeal and boiling water cooked in oil and a cast iron skillet, hoe cakes and she served them with pinto beans, onions and fried potatoes. She was from northeast Arkansas. I loved them.

The Cowboys is the absolute best John Wayne movie. I love the story of young boys growing up and becoming men. Awesome movie.
  • I was a lucky boy back in the 60's. My grandparents mainly raised me after my mom died at a early age. This was one of my all time favorite things that she made that I loved. She made homemade fresh biscuits everyday. Then on on a Sunday or so she would make the corn dodgers. I still remember packing some in my pockets after dinner when I went out to play. Our dog had to be the luckiest dog on the planet. He never ate dog food. He had grandma's leftovers 3 times a day. He was never chained, tied or fenced in and he never missed a meal. Thanks Kent for the recipe reminder. I have to make these for the family this weekend. PJ

God bless ya Kent, Shannon, and the puppers and thank you for your continued support of our soldiers, veterans, and first responders.

We cooked up a batch of dodgers and took them while backpacking in the Wheeler Wilderness. Worked out pretty good and went well with our deer jerky and dried apples. Our bear bag worked well, too.

I'm a British lad and I don't know how I found your channel, but I love watching it for new cooking ideas. As much as I preferred Eastwood, three films Wayne starred or appeared in will always make me smile as i watched them with my family True Grit, Rio Grande and The Longest Day.

I watch you all the way from Portugal! It's so fascinating to be able to learn from you, not only about food, but history surrounding the recipes. I was not born in America, but I'm American at heart ❤ I love that American flag behind you! So grateful for your channel! 😊

Kent, I just found you channel. I was raised on John Wayne movies. I know that my dad watched almost all of the 179 movies he made. Our favorite was ' The Cowboys', but I liked alot of his movies. Thank you for keeping the cowboy way alive. My dad worked as a cowboy for over 45 years.

Oh my God I thought I was not the only one that use the shovel trick, my grandpa and grandma showed me that and they were survivors of the Great depression they showed me how to cook all sorts of stuff on there weatherby potato cakes two ingredient biscuits pancakes and if you were careful fried potatoes this was another great video glad to watch it going to have to make some of these and little honey to go with them

I can remember as a child when my great great grand father was still alive, he would make these. Believe he was born in 1899 and passed in 1981 which I would have been 9 when he passed, but he loved cooking dodgers and mixing bacon in them. Fun memories, Great video Kent.

John Wayne's version of True Grit is one of my favorite films. I've always wondered what a Corn Dodger was. As I recall, Mattie Ross was going to try one until she found out that Rooster had them in his pocket! Thanks, Kent!

Love this guy. I grew up with my grandparents showing me John Wayne cowboy movies. The nostalgia you bring on top of it being wholesome and amazing recipes. I dont know what more I can ask for.
  • @donwick8449
My Grandma always served her's plain, hot, and with apple butter. Still a simple food for a quick breakfast.
  • @robertf584
Thank you Rollins for showing me what I was doing wrong. I was using warm water and adding too much water. Making sort of a pancake type batter. I tried these this morning and they were perfect. I agree with you that these will probably replace corn bread at dinner. Many thanks from those of us who are challenged in the kitchen......or fire pit! It makes me smile at how many are watching for the entertainment value when I am just trying to eat good! After going gluten free for health reasons I have to say....I miss wheat..... but thanks to you and John Wayne, I now have corn dodgers.

I’m a little late to this party as this video came out a month ago, but True Grit has a special place in my heart. I was born in 1963 so while I gone to lots of movies before, True Grit was what I’d call the first “grown up” movie I ever went to the theater to see. I was hooked for life. Kent and Shannon, my wife and I love everything you do. Keep on cook’n.

Kent, I'm a Boy Scout Leader, I love to cowboy cook, and I'm a HUGE John Wayne fan. This episode has me jumpin! This weekend, I have one of my scout patrols on a camping trip, and they are making bacon-corn dodgers in cast iron skillet. I can't wait! And finally. Although I have MANY favorite JW Movies (Searchers, Rio Bravo, Comancheros, and others) I always wanted to be one of those little boys who grew into a man in The Cowboys. Thanks for all that you and Shan do for our entertainment and learning. Be well!
