    You’re a good interviewer…do more!
  • @jameslevine1873
Great interview - and another string to your bow.. Really like the face-to-face format and proper conversation, both interviewer and interviewee given time to speak at length. If you enjoyed it too, I hope it's the start of another rich seam of music-first..!
  • One of my favorite episodes yet. 2 gentlemen with eclectic musical tastes, speaking intelligently about music and for those unfamiliar, Steven is one of the most talented and original musicians/engineers of our time.

Steven Wilson is one of my favorite artists! I discovered his work by finding a discarded CD wallet with several Porcupine Tree albums in it. Being a Prog Rock fan since first hearing Rush in 1977, this was right up my alley, and down the rabbit hole I went. Great interview, and thanks for your music-first approach to Hi-Fi gear.
  • No wonder that all the big labels jump on Dolby Atmos, giving them the opportunity to sell the same music once more, having sold it to Spotify.

Quite possibly the best interview I’ve watched, ever. I’m a huge fan of Steven’s work. Hearing his views on Dolby Atmos/Spatial Audio and his approach is quite something. Refreshing to hear the honesty about it.
  • Mr Wilson’s work on Jethro Tull classics has been a revelation to this die hard Tull fan since 1972

23:46 - David Bowie's estate is utterly bonkers. Steven Wilson: "Can I do an Atmos remix of Ziggy Stardust?" DBE: "No, lol" Meanwhile.... Chris Young: "Can I use the guitar riff from 'Rebel Rebel' for my cheesy-ass generic bro-country song?" DBE: "Sure, just give us songwriting credit, rofl"

The camera work on this interview is absolute perfection. The timing of the cuts back and forth is what makes the dialogue immersive! Darko, you have got to do more of these types of interviews!
  • @chairthrower
Wilson is by far the best spatial mixer. It's hilarious to think the secret apparently is he does what sounds musical, in contrast with other engineers. He also seems to have great knowledge of the original mixes so his spatial ones honor the original mixes.

Love love love this format! Really nice interview as well.

Steven Wilson's been my favourite artist since first hearing Porcupine Tree in 2006 and I had the pleasure of telling him that 'Hand. Cannot. Erase.' is my favourite album of all time when i met him at a signing a number of years ago. Great interview and I can't wait to hear Frankie...in the autumn!!!
  • @bulloguin
I own quite a few Wilson’s mixes on 5.1. Many YES mixes, a couple of XTC, also two from Tears For Fears, and two I really love from Emerson Lake and Palmer the debut album and the amazing Tarkus. So sad that he stopped doing ELP 5.1 albums mixes. I admire his work on these remixes. I only hope from the deepest corner in my heart, he could remix the first two albums from Wetton’s Asia, Asia and Alpha boy that could be a dream come true. Congratulations for his genius in remastering and mixing and big cheers for this awesome interview.

He gets it. I would just add that classical is also having a big Atmos moment with some spectacular new and old recordings. I think of stereo and Atmos as two ways to listen. Sometimes I want the depth and space of Atmos. But sometimes the intimacy of stereo is preferable. Sometimes, I only can play stereo via speakers, like the car or office. There are indeed some awful stereo mixes. But on the whole, Atmos by top labels have been mixed well for some years now. Maybe a great stereo mix is analogous to a rich, deep Ansel Adams photo in black and white. Unquestionably a camera and darkroom masterpiece. While Atmos is like an amazing color photo of the northern lights by a National Geographic photographer with the latest DSLR and printed the size of a massive poster by a top inkjet printmaker. They might even be a photo of the same place. I’ve interviewed many creative people on camera and for a first time, you are a natural!

I could watch this for hours, Steven knows what he’s talking about and there’s no bs. Being a prog fan I have almost all his mixes. What really convinced me was hearing a Yes album probably Fragile in 5.1 at home and just wandering around the room and you can hear Chris Squire’s backing vocals clearly in the rear speaker and all the little details which you miss with a stereo mix. Steve’s own albums are created with a spatial mix in mind from the start and sound amazing even in 5.1. When you separate out the different instruments into different speakers, the speakers themselves react different than when you have the whole band coming from a single speaker. It’s definitely here the stay and the selling point about atom is that you can have 13 speakers in your room or you can have a sound bar or anything in between and the atmos algorithm will work out how best to play the music with the equipment you have. Another YouTube channel that talks about atmos a lot is Present Day Productions who are a mixing/mastering studio but are now mixing everting in their dedicated atmos studio which is probably one of the best studios for atmos in the country, they even make their own speakers, I’d love these guys to get together with Steven. Thanks for the video and more interviews would be awesome

I could listen to you guys for hours...
  • Really great talk, Mr Darko. Hearing you and Mr. Wilson volley about great music is a wonder. Appreciate the matching outfits as well.
  • @GutekZ
Steven Wilson made a surprisingly good case for Dolby Atmos, despite tough questions from Darko. Kudos.
  • @TheStache57
When Steve said he'd like to do Talk Talk or Kate Bush I got chills!
