With the killing of US Missionary John Allen Chau on the 25th November 2018, a small island in the Indian Ocean called North Sentinel Island became a household name - and his Neolithic, violently isolationist, tribal Sentinelese killers the subject of amazement and mystery. Having lived on their island for around 60,000, they are the modern population group we know the least about, every attempt to land on North Sentinel Island ending in an attack mounted by armed tribesmen on the beach. In this video I'll look at the history of the island and look at how modern events unfolding there can be of anthropological use when looking at the past.

Fun fact: during ww2 when the Americans and Japanese were fighting over the Pacific, they flew planes over primitive islands. When explorers came to those same islands in the 70's the planes had become gods. With this in mind, it is quite possible that we are seen as devils or some sort of evil spirit.

I researched this years ago before this blew up a couple of years ago. I remember reading that there were more sentinelese on a neighbouring island that were nearly completely wiped out by disease after the British visited in the 1800s, some of the survivors fled to North Sentinel island and thats when the people started becoming very hostile.

For an island thats illegal to vist it has 2 five star Google reviews. The more you know
  • Under Indian laws, getting killed by this tribe is the same as getting killed by a pack of wolves. They cannot be prosecuted. They have federal protection. Even the Indian Navy isn't allowed to operate their warships in the vicinity of this island. Legally speaking , the term murder/homicide might not even be applicable. Let's just say that Mr. Chau committed suicide.
  • Bruh i think they are still thinking that their new iron arrows are the strongest weapons on Earth

Imagine the native mythology that must have formed around the outside world. Strangers show up every number of years. Once, some people were taken and returned. Huge vessels made of strange metal have washed up. A few days after a tsunami a strange flying thing shows up in the skies. Even in the coconut contact video you can hear the noise of the boat that must have been terrifying to them. What sort of folklore would accompany these events?
