Published 2024-03-19
March 19th, 1963, marked the final day of recording for the best-known version of the classic song "The Girl from Ipanema." The record (featuring saxophonist Stan Getz, composer Antônio Carlos Jobim on piano, João Gilberto on guitar, and the voice of Gilberto's wife, Astrud), was a smash, and helped bossa nova explode around the world. Charles Osgood reports in this "Almanac" originally broadcast in 2006.

  • It's good to hear the voices of both Charles Osgood & Charles Kurault again.

This version with Astrud is the very best🥰 Whenever I feel stressed, my mind plays this song and it has a soothing effect. Whenever I mindlessly wander, I end up with the first notes of this song. It's like my pacifier or Linus' blanket (from "Peanuts" comic strip)😁💖

My radio station, WDCB 90. 9FM, on Sunday afternoons, plays this song, occasionally, on a radio show, called “The Sounds of Brazil (These Are)”.

  • Frank Sinatra got into the Bossa Nova style, and recorded an album of arrangements...
  • Stan Getz paid Astrud only a regular recording session for her work. Getz also hated bossa nova. He bought an apartment in NYC with the record's profits. It caught on fire. Karma.
