Classic sloppy Joe’s you can make as sloppy as you like. I tend to cook mine slightly drier but full of moisture, with all the classic sloppy Joe flavour. I always top with pickles and cheese.

Great advice about the chopping of the onion Rik those chefs on tv just blow hard .!

Used to make these for my children years ago. Rik, a Sushi Chef showed me your onion dicing trick. He was cutting shallots super fine! I never went back to the other method. American cheese is processed using Colby, and American cheddar. You can find the white cheese here. Now I’m hungry

I live in the north east, cold , rain . But guess what I cooked some S.Jays and what a brilliant result following your recipe.
  • that certainly looks tastier than the old Glasgow standby... a piece and mince. A couple of spoonfuls of beef mince slapped between a slice of Mother's Pride plain bread with brown sauce. 😀

Fantastic dish for a large gathering, put it in a slow cooker and everyone help themselves. 😋😋👍👍

I take a slightly different tack on the soggy bun bottom problem: assemble it upside down, piling everything onto the top part, then turning it over to eat it. Not as great in plate appearance, but it works.

I love Sloppy Joe's. I could eat three at once lol. These look so good. I confess to usually buying the sauce in a can.

The only difference I can see is the addition of the beef gravy. Looks so good. Pickles and American cheese yum. As a Yank I have to say you did a great job.

Howdy from San Saba, Texas. I grew up eating Sloppy Joe’s my entire life. We usually have more of a tomato based version, but I believe it like yours better. I’m going to try it as soon I can. I’m new to your channel and I’m really enjoying it. Keep up the good work.

When i was a kid in late 60s in Liverpool my best friends mum had married a GI and she used to make sloppy joe, this takes me back 50odd yrs, happy days 😢
  • Hi Rik, I'm from the USA and the ingredients!:hand-purple-blue-peace: you added except the use of Worcestershire sauce. However, Rik I love your addition of the gravy everything's better with gravy.

It looks extra delicious coming from an American. Yum yum.

In the US & Canada, this is a traditional meal served on Friday or Saturday night accompanied by coleslaw on the side and sweetened iced tea or a cola to drink. I cook the sauce using equal portions of Campbell's tomato soup and ketchup; beef broth to dilute, seasoned by salt, pepper, worstershire sauce and a good shaking of taco seasoning, along with the same vegetables you used. The wooden spoon should stand on its own upright when the sauce is done. Some people cook it for hours which I find unnecessary. A beloved dish for the young ones and even fussy teenagers. Your version looks very tasty too.

Looks so good. I had Sloppy Joe's a couple of times, when I lived in Yorkshire. I think it's a Northern meal. They didn't toast the rolls or put cheese and pickles in them. I like your recipe. Definitely something tasty to try. Thanks for sharing. I'd forgotten all about Sloppy Joe's and didn't know all the ingredients needed.

I've been making Sloppy Joes for many years, but never thought to add beef flavoring and Wooster sauce. I'll have to give it a try. Sans those two ingredients, I like to add just a few drops of liquid smoke, very carefully, so as to give it just a hint of BBQ flavor. (It's really easy to overdo it.) Of course, without the beef gravy, a little more tomato-based sauce of one's choice would be needed. I'm guessing that canned Sloppy Joe sauce isn't available in the UK... too bad. It makes for an incredibly simple meal for those times when minutes (or motivation) matter. I think Aldi's Brookdale brand (available here in the US) is pretty decent, though I do tend to "play" with it. (When using canned sauce, I always end up adding onions and sweet peppers in with the meat.) Even straight out of the can, mixed with the cooked beef, Brookdale is quite tolerable, not to mention inexpensive. Thanks for another enlightening video, Rik!

Heard of them , but never knew exactly what they were , very similar to spagbol sarnies .
  • @swc2019
We make "spoon burgers" which is very similar to your recipe. It's a Campbell's soup recipe and thus has undiluted chicken gumbo soup instead of brown gravy. I think the gravy would taste better.
