Thanks for this video. Have traveled past here but never had the nerve to drive it. The westbound lanes have been covered over for some reason. PTC still owns the property and the tunnel and Ganassi Racing rents it. Glad you weren't told to leave.

You should do a video on the Logan's Ferry Mine Tunnel, also know as the Springdale Mine Tunnel. It was closed long ago and I've always wondered about it since it's close to my home in New Kensington. It was built under the Allegheny River and carried coal via mine cars from Logan's Ferry, under the river to the Electric Power Plant in Springdale. Wikipedia states that they believe it is flooded now but I don't think anyone really knows.
  • Bradley overgrown? This looks very nice and cleaned up compared to the other two tunnels.

I remember when Laurel Hill tunnel was still in use the first time I rode on the Turnpike in 1962.
  • Hi Dave, I drove up to the western portal and there was a state cop car. I drove up to it as it was running with a.c. on and officer was sound asleep..i backed out quietly.
  • I drove back to the tunnel in 1982 and the rocks were not there at that time. My guess is the rocks are from other excavations on the turnpike in the last several years IE: the widening to 6 lanes from 4.

A great vid on something I have wanted to do years ago. And yes I am surprised nobody said anything to you.

I guess there is no way to get in. I assume if they race in the tunnel that they must have resurfaced it. the road leading up looks in a lot better shape than the two other abandoned tunnels

Is it abandoned to regular turnpike traffic? yes... is it abandoned to a set of wheels on a car at any point in time? oh no.... Ganassi Racing teams use the tunnel for speed tests in Nascar and sometimes Indycar. Thats part of why there is that new metal construction building added on the end in the video. Thats one of the turn around spots.

Actually, it's the Laurel Hill tunnel if I remember my early maps right but a great video.

did anyone come out and asked what you were doing there??
  • I didnt know they held races in the tunnel. I thought it was just used for race car testing.
