In the ex-Fox News anchor's most in-depth interview since leaving broadcast television, Megyn Kelly sounds off on Donald Trump's attacks against her — and how they impacted Fox News and its then-CEO Roger Ailes.

In the run-up to the 2016 election, she says Ailes "wasn't ready to just lie down for Trump." But then "Trump would continue to grow in power, and I think Ailes would get a little bit more deferential to him."

Kelly also weighs in on the Obama years and speaks about Hillary Clinton — whom she says "enabled" her husband Bill's behavior. "...The woman who would go into office, if [Trump] lost, was no saint either..." she says.

This interview was conducted by FRONTLINE’s Michael Kirk on October 3, 2019, during our reporting for "America's Great Divide: From Obama to Trump,” a four-hour special series on how America’s current polarization came to be. It has been edited for clarity and length.

  • Love her or hate her, you have to agree that Megyn is an extremely well spoken, articulate person. I don’t think she said “like” or “um” once through this entire 42 minutes
  • @rosscads
It’s valuable to have her articulate the Republican viewpoint, even if you don’t agree with it.
  • @CounterSniper67
Need a follow up interview. Let’s see what her perspective is now.
  • I'm not a big fan of Megyn Kelly, but this was a great interview. She understands people and politics very well.
  • @mmrgratitudes
I am pleasantly surprised that PBS let her talk so candidly, especially about Obama, Obamacare, race, etc. Kudos to PBS for a great interview. Great job!

TBH, this is the best interview in light of Megan Kelly ever witnessed so far. Interviewer asks fair questions bringing balance for public to hear out Megan Kelly. Didn;t realise from this interview I begin to understand the frustration and how misunderstood she was - and her opinions and thoughts towards bipartisan views are very intellectual and observant. Nice to see the real Megan Kelly, and my newfound respect and empathy and hope for her.
  • @loisahn
This is actually a really great interview. I love listening to her perspective.
  • @CNAwarrior
“What am I supposed to be outraged about now? Give me a minute I need to work on my outrage.” Right on point Megyn!
  • @top6ear
This is how to conduct an interview, these pieces are great reportage.

I’m not a Meghan kelly fan but this was a fascinating interview to say the least. I thought her historical context on most things were accurate from the GOP perspective. Palin/trump section was fascinating.
  • I wonder what Megyn Kelly thinks now in the wake of what happened from November 2020 through January 2021.
  • @George-bs3nb
Would enjoy hearing Megyn’s perspective regarding January 6th
  • Megyn Kelly impresses me. She is so intelligent and classy and open minded.
  • @ericalepman1377
I find her perspective very interesting. Regardless of opinion, she is incredibly intelligent.
  • @wancar7380
i bet she regrets her comparison between those two presidents now.
  • @foggyfrogman1
I wonder why she didn’t bring up lobbyist influence.
  • @LordTrayus
Oh this interview did not age well. We'll be okay she says.
  • I may not agree with everything, but I appreciate the perspective. Thanks PBS! Please keep the unbias going!
