In this video I show you how to play 3 songs by Def Leppard that are from the early "Classic" era. I demonstrate Let It Go, High And Dry and Bringing On The Heartbreak. All three of these songs showcase that classic gritty riff filled sound from Steve Clark and Pete Willis that helped define the Def Leppard style. These songs are off the album High 'N' Dry which came out in July of 1981. There are some really tasty riffs that are fun to play as well as learn some cool techniques from within these tunes. I hope you enjoy the Video. Please subscribe!

Great job Marty! I play Let It Go by bending the double-stop on the 4th fret a semi-tone. If you listen to the recording, that is what is happening. Your method makes it more clear for beginners, as the double-stop bend may be tough for newer players. Instead of going to a full G chord, you can play open D and G strings in between...much easier that way too. In the context of a full band, it likely isn't as noticeable but wanted to share my two cents.

Thanks for the refresher. I used to play these riffs for my young bride, 30 years ago. 😉 I bought On Through The Night when it first came out. I'm that old. The first records were great. I did like the Pete and Steve era, though. So in 1996 my wife and I saw Queensryche and Def Leppard. I didn't want to go because I didn't think Def Leppard would play the old tunes. Wrong! They opened with all of their A-tuning songs. Hit and Run. Let it Go. I was blown away. I think they played three or four songs back to back before welcoming the crowd.
  • This is crazy!!! I’ve been listening to this song for the last 2weeks.Let it Go is their best song

Love the technical analysis that you add in.

Killer, Marty!! Just killer stuff. The foundation of Def Leppard. Steve Clark laid it down, and this was it. The rest is history, as they say. Such great stuff they had back in the day, and that led us to Pyro and Hysteria. The riffage was so bad as back then. What a band!! I'm so glad they are still around. Good stuff, Brother!

I was just learning Lady Strange yesterday lol! Awesome stuff!

Oh man! These are some of the best DL tunes! Such raw energy in those days. What I love about their catalog is how they’re songs and musicianship progressed over the years. I dig it all. Let it go is such an aggressive tune, musically and vocally. Thanks for this video Marty. I’m all set for my weekend jams now!

I like when you say ……. “this is what it sounds like to me “ just due to the fact that each of us guitarists have their own interpretation of how something may sound! Some of us may hear some more intricate sounding progressions or some may just take the simplest part of each progression or phrasing but all in all it’s pretty well bang on when you bring it to us! Another great job brother!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
  • Those first Leppard albums were great. You Nailed the tone. That sounds just like the Album. Some Scorpions, that four album sweet spot from Animal Magnetism to Love at First Sting. Always nice to see something drawn by hand after months and months of perfect straight lines and circles. Good stuff.

So many memories of learning these songs. Don't often go back to Def Leppard. Though I always seem to stray towards BTO in private lol
