-------------------------------------------
What is Scrum framework?
--------------------------------------------

Scrum is a framework for managing complex projects based on iterative and incremental processes. It was first publicly introduced by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland in the mid-90s and Scrum Alliance (scrumalliance.org) was established as a non-profit organization in 2001, offering the Certified Scrum Master certification.

Later, in 2009 Ken Schwaber established scrum.org offering the Professional Scrum Master certification with different exam structure and focus compared to the Certified Scrum Master.

------------------------------------------------------
Preparation and Level of Difficulty
------------------------------------------------------

First of all, there are no eligibility criteria in order to take both the Certified Scrum Master and Professional Scrum Master Exams. Both of them are designed for people who work in Agile environments and apply the Scrum framework to their projects.

However, in the case of the Certified Scrum Master, it is required to take a CSM course by a Certified scrum trainer prior to the exam. You have the freedom to choose a Certified Scrum trainer from the Scrum Alliance website database, who will provide you with the necessary classes and training prior to your examination.

You can find Certifies Scrum trainings here:
www.scrumalliance.org/courses-events/search?ctyp=C…

Unlike the Certified Scrum Master, the Professional Scrum Master does not require prior trainings or courses. If you already have an understanding of the Scrum guide and how to apply it to your projects. In case you are not familiar with Scrum you are free to take any course by Scrum.org or any training provider like Udemy, LinkedIn Learning and others.

Compared to CSM, the

Exam Structure
------------------------

The exam structure between the two certifications is different.

Certified Scrum Master (CSM®️) exam offers multiple attempts.
Professional Scrum Master (PSM®️) has more complicated exam and only one attempt per test.

When it comes to Certified Scrum Master, the structure is quite simple. It is a single exam, which requires you to answer 50 multiple choice questions within 60 minutes.

The Professional Scrum Master, on the other hand, includes 80 Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer and True/False questions. The time frame is again 60 minutes.

For Certified Scrum Master, you will be able to pass the exam by correctly answering 74% (37 out of 50) questions in 60 minutes.

For Professional Scrum Master, you have to score at least 85% (68 out of 80 questions).

------------------------------
Certification Costs
------------------------------

Depending on your selected training provider the cost may vary.

For Certified Scrum Master, the prior training is mandatory and different training providers set different prices for the training. So generally, Certified Scrum Master certification costs range from $400 - $2500.

Since Professional Scrum Master does not offer mandatory courses, the cost for PSM 1 certification exam is fixed at $150 per exam.

-----------------------------------
Certification Renewal
-----------------------------------

After passing Certified Scrum Master exam, you will have to renew it every 2 years. The renewal will cost you only $100. Besides the renewal fee, you need to submit Scrum Education Units (SEUs). One hour spent educating yourself in Scrum equals one SEU.

Professional Scrum Master does not require an additional renewal fee. It has no expiration date and will stay valid for a lifetime.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which Certification Content is More Valuable?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both CSM®️ and PSM®️ provide similar content, which requires the individual to have knowledge in Scrum, the Scrum Guide and prior experience in the field. So, overall, the content is consistent in both cases, it is the interpretation of trainers that may differ in the exam preparation training.

This is one of the better videos explaining CSM vs PSM. Succinct and clear. Thank you.
  • I think the other thing a lot of people don’t point out is that while their might be a “renewal fee” for csm or PMP etc etc. I’ve never once seen someone say “hey when did you get certified” you just put it on your resume. Now you may not be able to use the designation? But no one cares if your cert is active or not.

Thanks Kristine.. appreciate this.. it was a quick one which may help me and my team in the decision making .. I guess PSM is slightly tougher but will be better in the longer run..
  • Thanks Kristine for this transparent and informative video. Just a feedback: If you add which one is in demand or which one employers/organizations prefer, it will be more helpful. But anyway, Thanks! Love from Kolkata. :)

Thanks. Going to take the PSM route

Hello, thank you for your valuable content, could you give your opinion on PMI's Disciplined Agile Scrum Master (DASM) Certification, please. Thank you.
  • There is a big difference you are not highlighting - PSM is a certificate only, while CSM is a certification.  And Scrum is not about exams, difficulties of exams. Scrum is a framework that's easy to understand but difficult to master. CSM helps pave the road to mastery. Scrum Alliance is a non-profit organization and the largest Scrum community.  And Scrum Alliance has fantastic advanced programs, that require CSM as a pre-requisite to move further with learning.
