The hotel is the 90 million pound flagship of an Asian hotel empire and one of the first hotels in the UK to bring traditional Asian hospitality. The programme follows members of staff as they are interviewed for their new jobs and also during their crucial first few months after the hotel's opening. 19-year-old chef Ollie lands his first job straight out of college, sommelier Anne tries to teach other novice restaurant staff about fine wine, including her protege Angela, an under-confident waitress from a pizza chain who feels completely out of her depth in the glitzy five-star world of the Shangri-La. There are also the two bellmen and childhood friends from Bermondsey, Thaddaeus and Eddie, who have never even been in a five-star hotel before.

How sweet of that couple to pay for Angela to stay at the hotel for a night! I think that's a great reminder that when you treat people well, it comes back to you!

Employing locals is win. I LOVE IT. I wish more multinationals did this. It's beautiful.

I felt so bad when the doorman said hi and politely smiled but everyone just ignores him đ

Wow; Angela took me away with her incredible kind and amazing personality. That card she wrote; sheâs such a peopleâs person - she is going to go far. I wish her all the best and continued success.

The mentor lady is amazing, i love how she compliments her staff and actually acknowledges there potential

The GM has no clue. You bring in a bunch of people, who have never worked at this level, or even have done some of the jobs that they are hired to do, and you expect them to be a 10 instantly? That is unrealistic. No one goes into any job instantly being 100% proficient. The smart thing would have been to get mostly experienced staff with a few new to it and train them up. This is not a staff issue, this is a GM issue.

Well done Angela for not giving up, with that attitude you are going places!

Fabios and Eddie really deserved that treat of a night's experience; I hope that they are still there! Great guys. Love the training and recruiting ethos.

I'd love to get served by Angela - what a wonderful personality! The Shard is very fortunate to have her on their team!

Stayed there 3 times now, I can honestly say the service & attention to detail is simply outstanding!

I worked part time as a porter in a luxury hotel when i was a student. I absolutely loved it. Best job I ever had. I made so much in tips, I never spent my wages. The secret is treat the guest as if they are royalty lol pamper them. Everyone loves to be treated special. It was the best job in the world.

You're telling me a 5 star hotel hasn't thought of getting a foldable wine trolley made to navigate getting wine from the basement to the 38th floor. Mind boggles

As an 18 year old I was manager of the Minibar Department at Londonâs âPark Lane Hotelâ. I was also thrown in the deep end, thrived and loved every second of it, ditto with this fabulous doco too. I can relate so well to the staff here and their initial lack of confidence. What a wonderful life changing experience for all of themâĻa huge congrats!

15:56 - "Young Ollie beat off 100 other applicants to get the job" I'm sure that's one way to guarantee a happy ending
-
I love this so much! This is more a story about how these people are growing and blossoming in their new environments. Angela especially stood out, and I'm glad her boss took notice of her talent. It's beautiful and hopeful. What a great documentary, this was so interesting a fun to watch!

Brings back happy memories as I had the opportunity to work at the hotel and attended the opening đ

At 41:26 that was a really sweet, lovely moment (brother surprised sister on her Birthday). My eyes teared up with the sister's surprised happy reaction â¤

The ending was so sweet đĨš

Everyone has to start from somewhere. I think it's a wonderful idea employing local staff who will be more than willing to learn, grow and become loyal to a brand in their neighbourhood. It's a smart thing to do and a win/win for everyone.
