Last weekend we ran Moons Out Goons Out 2024, a night rifle match presented by Tactical Night Vision Company at the Echo Valley Training Center. The match was a fantastic success, and I figured I'd give you some overview takeaways to the whole event before posting my complete stages runs later this week. I did run the match twice, once in Active division with a Hi-Point carbine and BE Meyers MAWL IR laser module and once in Passive division with a prototype Q Boombox and an AGM Clarion thermal scope. By doing it in that way, I managed to handicap both my runs, and did...not very well.

Thanks to our awesome match sponsors! Thanks to them, we were able to make this a great event with an outstanding prize table:
TNVC
AGM Global Vision
BE Meyers
Brownells
Gorilla Ammunition
Q
Refuge Medical
T-Rex Arms
Varusteleka
Virginia Citizens Armory

Anyone else amazed of how far video technology has come? Its amazing to think that this was shot at night and feels almost like day.

You didn't use the 30 super carry hi-point running 7.65 french long? SACRE BLEU!

"I took it too far." The motto for every shooting match Ian does.

    ESF (Elbonian Special Forces) setup.

Not for official scoring or anything, but it would be interesting to see a score/dollar-amount-of-setup to see if there was any correlation at all.

My take-away from this: Hi-Point > Q! Always knew it. All hail the Point.

Thanks a ton for putting together this event. I had an absoluter blast. Everyone I met was excellent, and the match itself was awesome. Can't wait for next year.
  • Wool is good in wet conditions. Fleece is good as well since it is designed to be synthetic wool. And Layers is the key. Especially when doing physical activity in the cold. You can take off a layer and adjust for comfort if needed.

The clip at 15:25 needs to be in one of those "X but without context" videos.
  • Alternate PCC setup suggestion: Ruger PC9 - either standard stock model with full-length Pic rail addition or chassis version. Glock mags, better ergonomics, still weird/pedestrian enough to make the point.

I really think the thermal issue illustrates a match design issue. In a world where some competitors may be using thermals, you definately need heated targets.

I agree with you on Varusteleka. I got into their wool stuff this winter and its magic. I got to go on a couple hour walk in the woods on a 5°F snowy evening and I was perfect comfortable. Layered wool is the way.

I genuinely appreciate you running a PCC for a run and giving feedback on it. I plan on participating next year with either a Ruger PC charger or a Scorpion Micro 3. I have a concept called Clandestine Carry I'd like to put to the test, and part of it involves using a PDW with digital night vision (because I'd rather carry around a cheap set of NV rather than expensive tubes everyday, ya know). Between you, Brass Facts, and soon to be Hops video, I'll have a really good idea of what to prepare for over the year. Cheers Ian!
  • Once again Ian's gun choices are more about coolness than optimal selections. We luv him for it. 🙂😉🐶

I was gonna say one of those KelTec Sub2000s with the rebate might have taken care of the ammo, reload, and rail space issues
  • I admire your approach, thought process, and reasoning. Such as the reasoning behind deciding what system to run with and whether it should be high end or minimal. Your concept of using a budget/ economical and sleek low-profile silhouette sbr included. It's reminiscent of an m1 or de lisle mixed with a cx4. It's as if you were seeing if the high point could fit a specific role and application or even be in a class of its own.
