I started the college conversation with my daughter at age 9. As a single parent, I couldn’t afford to pay her tuition so she planned accordingly. You’re correct-community service is key, as well as participation in a team sport and music (ie band). She got a full ride to a State school, obtained employment from her internship, and that job paid for her masters degree.

You didn't mention Good Rx for a way to save on prescriptions. I had a prescription that would cost me $400 with my Medicare Part D. Good Rx price was $100. It was one of those Rxs with no generic. Good Rx is free and a great way to save on prescriptions.
  • I have cut back on watching fashion YouTubers or when I do- I shop my own closest. I found by watching fewer fashion videos I am saving money by not feeling like I need to buy more clothes or shoes.
  • Used textbooks: When I was in college, they were in demand because they contained notes from the previous user.
  • Another benefit of buying used boos, look for one that has a lot of notes in them. The previous owner’s notes helped me out so much when reading and forming papers off of those.
  • Our son was diagnosed with diabetes. Those supplies are insane. When we first came home from the hospital our insurance wouldn't pay for anything. I contacted the companies themselves and asked if they had a customer assistance program. They did and were able to help us with substantial coupons. A huge blessing because just the dexcom and pump was 1500 a month😮 thats not including the actual medication.

I overheard a conversation at the dealership last Saturday while I was having my car serviced and a friend who just bought a car told me the same thing. With the availability to research fair market value on vehicles - the dealerships don't really discuss price and make deals anymore. But, your absolutely right about all the little things that can be added.

I have severe UC. My treatment Rx is $8000 every 2 months plus getting it by IV. Dr was able to find help from someplace for it as we couldn't afford it. What a blessing! Only pay for copay for getting it administered.

How I wish I had done my financial journey while my son was young. What an accomplishment as a family!

You can rent books from college bookstores. You can also buy digital versions cheap from the bookstores too. Keep the receipts so you can return them. Keep them in good shape too. They can mail them to you if you want to order them before classes start. Sometimes professors say wait until the first class before purchasing.
  • I have asked the pharmacist, the prescription in their system, to transfer it to another pharmacy. I've not had a problem having to go back to the physician to have them do it. Worth a try.

I got roof racks for my sedan. They come in handy if you see something along the road. Also if you buy fencing or a mattress you can load avoid delivery.

In my town, there was a car rental company that resold their used cars. Rental cars can be used hard, but they are usually sold with around 20,000 miles, sometimes less. They thoroughly refurbished the cars prior to sale. I bought two of them at a very good price, and ran each of them for more than 10 years.

The state of Massachusetts doesn’t allow coupon use on prescriptions. Many years ago I sent my husband to pick up a prescription for me, when he got home I asked what the price was, nearly had a heart attack when he told me $250.00 for a thirty day supply. I took the receipt from him as well as the bag (stapled closed) and took it back to the pharmacy. Because the bag had never been opened they gave me my money back. I then went to the neighboring store and purchased two one dollar scratch tickets. Got home scratched the tickets and had won $300.00. Called the doctor and asked for a less expensive prescription, which I got for under $10.00.
  • I love this channel. Some ways we save $ is: ✤Solar powers our car, home & bikes about 60% of the year ✤Grow 35% of our food. We have 10 Fruit trees, berry bushes & veges. We also can & freeze what we can. ✤Grow 35% of our food. Can & Freeze 10 Fruit trees, berry bushes & veges ✤As Food Bank Volunteers, we get their free old organic milk which allows us making home-made cheese, yogurt, butter, sour cream ✤Bought a major fixer upper home. Didn't get permits. Prop tax is just $1200 a year for our 950 foot cabin. ✤Outdoor bath/shower, kitchen, waterfall & pond. Preserves our indoor stuff making it last longer. ✤Chickens, goats, ducks & rabbits co-exist in our feed back yard w/our two labradors. Tasty eggs! ✤ Vacations are 2 weekends tent camping on the ocean. Drive the E-Car 5.5 hrs round trip.
  • Goodness. The prescription section is certainly an eyeopener. It makes me appreciate the NHS, here in the UK. Although its £9.90 per item, there are exceptions and you can get a prepaid prescription if you know you're going to be on the medication for more than 3 months. For children and over 60s and if you have certain conditions or on benefits, its free in England.

My friend died this week and because she donated her body to science it only cost $1000 to transport her body.. No funeral expense. HUGE savings over a funeral
  • We only buy new cars and keep for many years. Currently have a truck that is 25 years old and a minivan that is 16 years old. Just keep up the maintenance and they will last a long time. A used car, you don’t know how well the previous owner took care of it.

We look for hotels that include breakfast. (if they have fruit, you may take a piece for later) We eat a good breakfast and usually just have a snack for lunch so dinner is our only expense. Look for coupons and discounts on area restaurants for saving on the dinners too.
  • 100% agree on community college. So many students would decrease their debt load if they would do that. Also, if you live in Illinois, please look into the running start program. If your district offers it and your kids are motivated, they can graduate high school with a diploma and an associates degree.
