The only thing worse than a surprise/staged proposal is a public surprise proposal. How can such a stupid, antiquated idea, based on gender inequality, still be part of the norm or the expected in a society? A decision to marry should be mutual between the couple and based on mutual reasoning and discussions over time, not be part of the romancing game. Romantic gestures are absolutely lovely, but proposals should not belong to those in a modern society. In my country, the absolute majority of all couples reason jointly over time about marriage until they decide together. They obviously already live together at that stage, having tried out for some time if joint living works out in practice
