Hey Guys it's Barratt From the Gimpy Camper. We are here at Fontainbleu State Park that's just north of Lake Ponchartrain across from New Orleans. My wife wanted to visit New Orleans, so we made it happen. It's about a 45-minute drive across the causeway bridge which is almost 24 miles long. There were a couple of other places that I looked at before booking here but they appeared more to be in marshland and after seeing the beautiful images of the beach and lake, I thought this was worth the extra 15 minutes of driving.
Fontainebleu State Park is a 2800-acre park with many great things to do. One of the interesting things here along the road on the way in is the ruins of an old sugar mill that was built in 1852. There are 126 campsites with water and electricity as well as almost 40 primitive sites. They apparently only have 5 campsites with sewer hookups according to the site and since there are 23 premium campsites listed, I'm not sure how you would know which sites these are. There are two trails that are very popular in the park as well. The first is a 1.25-mile long nature trail, where they have a lot of signs labeling common plants and trees for the area. The second is a 4.8-mile trail that I believe is all paved and appears to be a great bicycling trail. There are also some cabins in the area however, this area was closed when we were there. I'm not sure if they were building new cabins or completely renovating the old cabins, but the ones I could see appeared to be new construction and right on the water. I believe this was due to damage from Hurricane Ida. It looks like it would be a wonderful place to stay. Apparently, there are also 12 glamping tents that are booked through Tentrr... but truthfully those didn't seem too impressive in my opinion.
Amenities: One of the most beautiful aspects of the campground in my opinion is the large Live Oak Trees that are covered in moss. These are scattered all across the park and are beautiful. Being that it's just after Christmas, they have some lights hanging on one large tree that has Santa's sleigh and reindeer under the tree. There are multiple bath houses across the campground, however, they seem to vary quite a bit as far as how old/nice the facilities are. I can say that even the older ones that I went in were nice and clean, they just had more rust noticeable on the sinks and stuff. The shower layout was also less private where there were a couple shower stalls with individual curtains behind a single larger curtain. There are a couple of nice playgrounds in the area as well. There is a large playground between the campground and the beach area. There is also another playground located between the two campgrounds which they have broken up into the north and southern campgrounds. Obviously one of the best amenities here is the beach area. Although it's a large lake, it feels like you are on the coast as you only get a slight image of a few taller buildings from New Orleans on a clear day. You can also see the Causeway bridge going across the water. While being about 45 minutes from New Orleans, you are only about 4 miles from the town of Mandeville which has a decent amount of accommodations, even including a cafe du monde which is over near the exit to get on the Causeway.

Very nice park. I like that you give your preferred sights. Lynn and Danny.
  • Looks like a nice place and lots of things to see. Thanks so much, maybe we will make it there someday
  • Thanks for the review. Great place to stay when visiting New Orleans. We would definitely stay here. Site 24 is very nice so are the others you mentioned.
  • Nice review . Great to be close enough to New Orleans , but far enough away to get that country feel. Love the infinity in the lake , those were some great views. And good call on those top sites. We really love having extra space !

We stayed there in February of 2024. Really enjoyed the 30+ miles of paved bike trails. I would like to mention that we stayed in site #1 which was a pull through. We noticed that the pull through sites have the power and water hookups on the opposite side which makes for a longer run if you have a shorter water hose or power cord as well as having both of those being a slight inconvienence laying on the ground on the entry side of your camper.
