My head canon is that since Legends Arceus revealed the Arceus we see in most games is just a small part of Arceus's whole and that Arceus can create endless legendaries in the Eternal Battle Reverie, this whole sim is Arceus creating legendaries to fight each other because it's bored.

I think what caused the timeline split was that there was literally no way that Necrozma would ever be able to win against Arceus, HOWEVER, Necrozma had absorbed Victini's energy, so by Victini it was ensured to always, always win. But with two unbeatable forces going up against each other, reality itself ended up fracturing into two in order for both possibilities to still take place.
