The release of Space Jam: A New Legacy is here, the sequel to the beloved (if not exactly great) original film, with LeBron James taking over for Michael Jordan. In this video, I go over why I think this film feels even more cynical than the first and talk about why I feel the movie...kind of hates itself.

"A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story" -C.S. Lewis
  • "Kids deserve better entertainment." Amen, they deserve the best. That's why original Looney Toons, Animaniacs, PBS, and Pixar were so great. They believed that

The LEGO Batman movie did the "look at the all the IP's we own" thing really well.
  • This movie is a literal representation of our society now: huge corporations trying to make you give your hard earned money to them shamelessly
  • The saddest thing about this movie is the fact that some of the animators for it were left uncredited in the credits. It's a shame because the 2D segments may have not been as good as they were before, but the Wonder Woman comic style was actually the best part of the 2D animation.

i absolutely despise the idea of "it's made for kids". it's a sequel to a movie made 25 years ago. there are tons of references to even older stuff that kids wouldn't even recognize. it's funny no one ever says "it's made for kids" when it comes to well received movies.

I didn't even see the movie, and it was still somehow the most cynically corporate movie I've ever seen.

I was REALLY hoping Lebron would ask "why do you look like Don Cheadle?"

The movie debates it’s own existence, and in the end, concludes that it should not exist

That Trinity flying crane kick had been parodied to death in the early to mid-2000s, it's wince-worthy to see it in 2021.

What went wrong? The Animaniacs didn’t get a single line.

The problem I had with Space Jam 2 was that it felt more like an WB advertisement. It screamed: "Look at how many properties we own." It also focused too much on LeBron rather than the toons themselves, which made for bland watching. Space Jam 1 had it's issues but it at least focused more on the toons than MJ, as it had stakes for which threatened the toons with eternal imprisonment on an amusement park. Where as in Space Jam 2 the toons were only told they were going to be deleted just before the game, which felt like a copout.

I had a bad feeling when they announced the director to be the same from SCARY MOVIE 5

I’m still laughing at taking out Pepe Le Pew but leaving in Alex and his droogs and Pennywise.

Even the og space jam gave Lola a cool bit of personality with her "don't ever call me doll" moment, and I'm sad that the new version seems to be stripped of that.
  • The Looney Tunes Show’s interpretation of Lola was so good. Kristen Wig does a great job. Would have like to see her voice Lola in this movie and make her more just someone good at basketball

"I'd be surprised if anybody was talking about space jam 2 next month", hell I almost didn't click on the video because I'm already done talking about it LOL

This beat the Emoji Movie as the longest commercial ever.

Did you ever see the 2011 "The Looney Tunes Show?" Lola bunny has an amazingly fun personality in that show, and it was an absolute wasted opportunity to not use that version of her in this new movie.

I love how everyone starts with "i want everyone to understand that space jam 1 is no masterpiece" as if the name of the movie isnt space jam.
