Menzies - Western Australia

Published 2023-08-22
Menzies has what is arguably one of the most unpleasant climates of any town in W.A. with the lowest of lows and some of the highest highs.

There isn't a great deal in the town to attract visitors but there are a few interesting buildings and some interesting attractions surrounding the town that make visiting worth while.

Nearby Lake Ballard features 51 metal sculptures created by artist Antony Gormley. The sculptures were apparently inspired by various residents of the town.

I have always seen Menzies as a great example of true Outback life, a fascinating place in it's extremes in climate, very low population & relative remoteness. Not a place for the faint hearted.

Never been there, am surprised by how small it is. I'd pictured a much bigger town in my mind. What is left looks to be well looked after, cheers.

I grew up in Menzies from approx 1968 to 1975, so this was a bit of a trip down memory lane. My mother was the full-time nurse at the Nursing Post, so we lived there. Plus, she met my step father in Menzies and eventually married him before we all moved down south to Dwellingup in 1975. I have been trying to find some photos and videos of the Nursing Post but have not been successful so far. Can you recommend any sources please? Thanks for sharing the video. PS: I forgot to also mention that my Uncle & Aunt lived there years later. He was the Shire CEO for some years, and they also ran the petrol station there I believe. We definitely have a double connection to this tiny bush town.

I wish I'd stopped overnight as planned and gone out to see lake Ballard. I was making good time and pushed on before blowing a head gasket in my charade just out of Leinster 🤦‍♂️ roadside assistance quoted 5 days to get to me 😆

I'm disappointed - 30 years ago the Shire Office had no clock - it had been on a ship from England and it sank! I thought it was a great story - now a clock has been installed. There was a blank space....
