FOUR Expensive Mistakes to AVOID When Buying Land ** for OFF-GRID Living **

2020-08-26に共有
Getting ready to buy land that you hope to develop and build your OFF GRID dream home on? Be sure to watch this video where we share our 4 BIGGEST mistakes we made when we purchased our land. Two of these mistakes could have saved us over $8000. We wanted to share our mistakes with you so you don't make the same ones in your buying land process.

0:00 - Intro

0:52 - Mistake #1 - Being too eager/impatient. It is HARD to not just go for it when you feel like you have found your dream piece of land, but we wish we would have slowed down a little bit to really think some things through before finalizing the purchase of our land.

2:13 - Mistake #2 - Understanding the details of your contract. When you purchase your land there may be a contract that includes road maintenance fees, access to various areas around/near your land, rules on how many structures can go on your land, if you can raise livestock on your land, etc. Be sure you know those details before you purchase.

3:48 - Mistake #3 - Get a Survey. This is one that could have SAVED us some major money that we are going to have to spend now. When you purchase your land, be sure to check when the most recent survey was last done. If it was done over 10 years ago and/or is no longer clearly marked, it will be worth the effort to have a survey done before you purchase.

6:14 - Mistake #4 - Find the RIGHT Real Estate Agent. If you are working with a real estate agent in your search for land be sure that your agent is familiar in helping people purchase land. If you don't you may spend WAY TOO much money on your land like we did.

Those are our 4 mistakes. We hope this video was helpful to you and has helped you feel more confident in purchasing your own land to build your off grid dream!!

Do you already own land? We'd love to hear what other mistakes to avoid that you would add to this list.

And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on YouTube. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 8 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.

Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

  • Dig out a natural lagoon where sewage can legally decay ( decompose ) and flow to! Add a lot of plants in the lagoon that clean the water! Fish also eat poop!
  • Thank you for giving numbers for context. I know expenses will vary greatly from location to location but it's nice to have an idea of how much somebody else spent to do something similar
  • We were going to buy land, but decided on buying a home in a neighborhood. Just couldn't find anything we wanted in our area, but this will be great for future reference!
  • Awesome video guys - great advice. This is an area that I'm trying to learn more about. I'm eager to get moving but you're right, it's important to take a step back and really do your homework and don't just rely on what agents etc are telling you. Thank you for this.
