The Victim/Witness Assistance Program is a court-based program that provides information, assistance, and support to victims and witnesses of crime to increase their understanding of, and participation in, the criminal court process. Services are offered on a priority basis to the most vulnerable victims of crime, begin once police have laid charges and will continue until the court case is over. Age-appropriate information and services are available for children.

After charges have been laid, staff will contact you to offer support, answer any questions you may have, and respond to any safety concerns. All services are free and voluntary.

The Victim/Witness Assistance Program can:

• Provide you with information about the criminal court process, victims’ rights, and the case you are involved in.
• Answer your questions about the criminal justice system, courtroom procedures and your role in court.
• Help you understand what to expect at each court date, and help you prepare for your appearance in court.
• Provide you with copies of court papers, such as bail conditions and probation orders
• Contact the Crown Attorney or the police officer in charge of your case on your behalf.
• Offer ongoing emotional support throughout the court process.
• Refer you to community agencies for other services you may need, such as counselling and safety planning.
• Arrange for language interpreters, address requests for accessibility accommodations.
• Help you understand and complete a Victim Impact Statement and/or Statement on Restitution.
