I once shared a cramped mountain hut with 12 people to shelter from bad weather. One couple had a nice, friendly, MASSIVE St. Bernard. Inexplicably in the middle of the night, it would get up and paw at one of the other occupants of our cabin and wake him up. This occurred several times. It turned out that he had sleep apnea and the dog got concerned when his breathing stopped. Amazing instinct.
  • I can’t believe you left out Golden Retrievers! The kindest, most loyal breed I’ve ever owned. Growing up, I had an Afghan Hound, Cocker Spaniel, and a Malamute. As an adult, we have Shelties (also, VERY loyal, and smart) Black Labs and Golden Retrievers. My kids have had Poms, Boxers, Aussies, etc. And hands down, out of ALL these breeds, it’s our Goldens that are the kindest and most loyal.

Golden retrievers are at the top of my list as kindest, most loyal and devoted dogs out there. I am surprised they didn’t make your list.😮
  • Had a border collie for 10 years. I couldn't have had a better friend. Intelligent, kind, loyal.

I’m on Samoyed 6-7 in 50+ years. I got a Sammy in College. I fell in love with the breed, kind, loving & intelligent. I’ve had two Sammys live to 15+ years. I like having two close in age. All my Sammys developed a large vocabulary- picked up common words, so I often use words & hand signals to train. I couldn’t live without this breed. ❤
  • Almost any dog can be the kindest. Depends on how you raise and treat it.
  • We reciently lost our Chloe a German Shepard of 15 years. She was a rescue from a high kill facility. Over her years she was a wonderful caring companion, Couch potato and guard dog. She loved dressing up for special occasions like Christmas and Halloween. At Halloween she would sit with us in the yard to pass out candy to all the children. I will miss her forever.
  • I rescued a Samoyed from a lonely life consigned to a roof top, being slung a few bread rolls a day and no contact with anyone at alll. Every word said here about them I support, he's the loveliest kindest dog I've ever had.
  • Oh you can't possibly not have mentioned Golden Retrievers!! They are the absolute kindest, most loving, gentle dogs...and I've had 5 different breeds, but my Golden was just something else. 🥰 I was pregnant and he would put his head on my womb at nights. And when my son was born, my Golden was so gentle and attentive to him. As my son grew into toddlerhood, my Golden was so patient with his antics and just so protective and loving. I've had 3 dogs since my Golden passed and I love all dogs, but my Golden Retriever was just something else. I miss him every day.

I heard this Will Rogers quote: "I don't know if dogs go to Heaven, but I want to go where they go."  If I'm around Golden Retrievers I'll know I made it to the right place.

I’m 44 and just got my first Basset 2.5 years ago. She is the best dog I’ve ever had. I love her so much
  • My favorite breed? One with four legs, a tail, and a great smile and temperament.
  • Newfies are the greatest dogbreed on earth. Never thought I'd meet a dog that loved people more than my late Retriever, but Newfs are from another world. By far the most gentle, most intelligent, and caring dogs you'll ever come across. They're also more polite and respectful than half of the people you meet.

I always rescue whatever dog needs a home. My current rescue was owner surrendered and after I got her-once a dog is in my home they do not leave—I found out why. She HATES other dogs. I walk her three or four times a day but I have to be careful where I walk. I’m 84 and do not want to fall. But she’s my baby, sleeps with me every night, and I love her so much.
  • We have had a border collie for two years. She’s the most sensitive sweet dog we’ve ever had. She does like to run and we try to walk her every day. She absolutely loves her little brother chihuahua

I have 2 Border Collies- purebred and yes they are as smart as they say!!!!! Loads of comedy, endless communication and terrific company. They figure things out including me. I love them like my kids! I have had 6 border collies over the years. The first 3 lived to 15 years 4th- 16 years. The latest are 3 and 4 years respectively. I expect them to be around for many more years. Can't imagine life without them! They absolutely love the grandkids. So sweet.

The most calm friendly dog is Hank. He was a an all white yellow Labrador. (Blond) . He loved everyone and barked literally once per year. spent time in an assisted living home. Tail ran over by wheelchair he just looked sad. Best dog ever.
  • My daughter's Golden is the smartest, sweetest, most playful and loving dog I've ever met. Leaving Goldens out calls your whole list into question.
