Coral reefs provide livelihood and resources to millions of people worldwide, but climate change and mass bleaching threaten their future survival. Can super-corals offer a glimmer of hope?
Verena is originally from Austria where she obtained a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of Innsbruck. She then completed her PhD at The Ohio State University in the U.S. In 2013, Verena joined the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at the University of Western Australia, and recently became one of the Research Program Leaders in the Centre. Her current research aims to provide insights into the mechanisms that enable climate change resilience in reef-building corals.
Verena has won several awards including the Presidential Fellowship of The Ohio State University and the Gretchen L. Blechschmidt Award of the Geological Society of America. She has published articles in journals such as Nature and Global Change Biology, and her work has been featured on many radio stations, websites and newspapers including The Age and Australian Geographic. In 2016, she was featured in the documentary “Verena Schoepf – Super Corals”. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
