  • The third one is not just Ningbo, it is Ningbo-Zhoushan harbor, a group of ports own by two different prefecture-level cities in Zhejiang Province

8 out of the top 10 are basically all Chinese
  • It tends to happen when a city (HK) produces little tangible goods and your neighboring city (Shenzhen, so young many never heard it before) produces world’s 95% electronics alongside with other manufacturing goods, and recently became a free trade zone. Plus, the US sanctioned HK in 2019 due to protesters and polices’ violent clashes and cancelled its trade privileges with the US (wicked sanction logic eh?), which was also during US-China trade war. All of that made HK less important for trade with particularly the US. Mainland China also built up larger and more advanced sea ports with better machineries. Transshipping to countries like Vietnam was also a strategy adopted by Chinese firms to avoid tariffs the US put on Chinese goods, which could be done on mainland Chinese ports anyways.

title should be "china competing with itself"
  • @mattep74
What happened to Hong Kong do drop like that? Nice to see a european port in the mix
  • @rusun5924
Thank you for classifying Hong Kong and Kaohsiung into China
  • India has about the same population as China and a much better Geographical location than China, yet India is not even on the list. Ports in some small Chinese cities have larger throughput than the whole India.
