Are Expensive Coffee Brewers Worth It?

This is an extensive review of three of the most popular coffee brewers on the market, but how do the compare to an inexpensive machine? I put these through their paces so that you can decide whether to stick with your reliable Cuisinart or upgrade to The Moccamaster, Breville, or Zwilling SCA certified brewers.

Here is my custom brew settings on the Breville:
For City Roasts:
Bloom Time: 1 min
Water Temp: 196°F/91°C
Flow Rate: SLOW
Pour Over: OFF

For City + and Darker Roasts :
Bloom Time: 45 sec
Water Temp: 196°F/91°C
Flow Rate: Medium
Pour Over: OFF

Removing the carafe before the screen reads bloom and placing it back once bloom is over makes for a milder more flavorful cup of coffee. Just don't wait too long because the cone shaped filter can only handle 500ml of water or a little over three cups before spilling over.

  • I’ve used a number of brewers but have settled on the TechniVorm Moccamaster for my morning cup and the Bonavita when needing more than 4 cups. I use the 8 “cup” version of the Moccamaster with the adjustable flow rate basket half open. This gives proper extraction time and the correct percentage of TDS for light to fully city roasts. Taste wise, this has consistently brewed the best cup out of the 6-7 brewers I’ve tried. Key to a good cup is great water, correctly, freshly roasted beans, and often overlooked, correct grind size with little fines or boulders. You’d be astounded how much simply changing burrs will effect the taste.

I've used my Technivorm for over 10 years. Daily. Home roasting for over 15 years. Leave the brew lid off the brew basket. My model allows me to bloom the roast. I turn it on, let it bloom, give it a stir, then let it drip. May or may not stir again. Usually not. I brew 8-10 cups daily. I love the simplicity of the Technivorm. An automated pour over.

Thank you!! I'v been considering the Breville for a while and your video is pushing me more in that direction
  • Finally, a true working chef who makes great You Tube content! I came upon your videos by accident and consider myself fortunate finding your channel. I wish you much success in the future, and keep up the great work, Chef!

This video was well done with great insight and knowledge. I appreciate your attention to detail and no bull approach.
  • @timblackmore884
Great Video! This came up on my feed just as I was looking for a new brewer. I've just gotten into coffee roasting and wanted to get something abit better than what I currently have. I love how you get into the details and its not just a superficial review. Thanks!!
  • @stevo53o
Appreciate your thorough yet concise dialogue. I will have to find your video about the bullet roaster.
  • @CynthiaKerns
Thank you for helping me decide which next coffee brewer to buy.
  • @thecheese2386
I really appreciate your thoughts and review. I took the leap and bought the Breville. I used your recipe for 10 cups and it is close to my Aeropress and pour over. I am very pleased with the ability to finally make 10 cups of GOOD coffee. Thank you for the time you put into the video.
  • @axion8788
How you put so much effort into this is beyond me. Amazing. My palate is nowhere near as discerning as yours but I am truly impressed by the depth of your research.
  • @jbgoldfinger
Wow, great video. I'm excited to up my coffee game now!
  • @dfuss2756
I have many ways to make coffee, and enjoy each one. Morning brew is a pour over, lafter lunch is a espresso, after dinner is a Greek coffee. Coffee is my one indulgence. Thank you for your hard work and experimenting. I enjoy your shows, they are educational.
  • @rmTheWalrus
I’ve had my Technivorm for I don’t even know how many years. I got used to the workflow. About filling the basket with grounds: there’s a cut out in the reservoir lid that allows you to push the brew wand to the side, which makes pouring the grinds into the basket as a last step easy. Thankfully mine can sit in a space in my kitchen where I don’t have to pull it out to fill with water.
  • Thank you! I learned a lot about these makers and the benefit or roasting ones own beans.
  • @gillf8569
Wow! I am so glad that i happened on your channel. This is the best, most complete review on anything i have ever seen. Thank you.😊😊
  • @jbarlow5615
I really appreciate the thoroughness of this YouTube review - very informative in scope, and by someone who loves their coffee. We use a chemex pour over, and are looking for something for when we have company and want to easily make 4 - 6 cups in the morning. Thanks again for this honest comparison!
